Melbury Lodge is our acute adult mental health inpatient unit in Winchester where our multidisciplinary team offers high quality recovery focused care to adults with a range of mental health disorders. Melbury Lodge has 25 beds across 1 male and 1 female ward.
We now have an exciting opportunity for a fitness instructor to join the team. We are looking to appoint a highly motivated, enthusiastic, flexible, resourceful, and resilient individual who is committed to providing support and assistance to patients in their recovery whilst an inpatient.
As a fitness instructor, you will be part of the OT team supporting the team by offering a variety of fitness activities to the patients, under the guidance and support of the Occupational Therapists. The role will involve running a mixture of group and 1 to 1 sessions. This post is part time 18.75 hours a week. The hours will include working some weekends, evenings, and bank holidays.
The successful post holder will need excellent communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with staff, service users and all stakeholders. The ability to prioritise changing work demands is essential. The post holder will co ordinate and conduct exercise programmes including 1 to 1 and group sessions for service users.
Main duties of the job- Co ordinate and conduct exercise programmes (including 1:1 and group sessions) for service users.
- Work as part of the occupational therapy service providing input to groups and sessions promoting healthy lifestyles.
- Work closely with the occupational therapists and MDTs in the unit, recognising and immediately escalating any concerns around patient deterioration or lack of progression.
- Be responsible for recognising signs of a potentially unwell patient while under their care either in class or 1:1 setting and escalating appropriately in a timely manner.
- Be responsible for the diary management of their sessions/service users.
- Ensure the fitness room and equipment are maintained to the agreed standard reporting issues to the Occupational Therapy team manager.

Person Specification Qualifications- Level 3 or 4 Personal Training Diploma or equivalent.
- First Aid Qualification.
- Member of the Register of Exercise Professionals.
- Appropriate Liability Insurance.
- Background in anatomy, biology, exercise physiology and sports biomechanics.
- Broad range of other qualifications (Exercise To Music, Circuit Training, Resistance equipment and free weights, Obesity and Diabetes Management).
- Proven teaching experience. Evidence of group and individual fitness instruction.
- Experienced in designing individual and group exercise programmes.
- Keen interest in mental health and wellbeing, physiotherapy, rehabilitation or health care provision.
- Experience of fitness or sports coaching.
