Eye Services Technical Officer

As an Eye Services Technical Officer, you will help keep our eye services running safely, smoothly and to the highest quality standards. Working as part of a supportive Eye Bank team, you'll carry out routine laboratory and processing tasks that directly contribute to patient care. From preparing samples and reagents to keeping accurate records and maintaining equipment, your work will support the safe handling of donated tissues every step of the way.

This is a practical, hands on role in a regulated environment where accuracy really matters. You don't need to be an expert on day one well support you to learn the skills you need, grow your confidence, and make a meaningful contribution to saving and improving lives at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT).

The working hours of this role are Monday to Friday, working either 07:00am 15:00pm or 10:00am 18:00pm. Please note there are two full-time roles available, doing one of these shift patterns each, you will not be required to do a mixture of the two shift times.

Main duties of the job

• Support the day to day work of the Eye Bank as part of a wider team
• Carry out routine laboratory and processing tasks in line with Standard Operating Procedures
• Prepare samples, reagents and paperwork accurately and on time
• Clean, operate and maintain laboratory equipment following set schedules
• Update donor and patient records, producing labels, worksheets and reports
• Ensure products are correctly identified, labelled and recorded to GMP standards
• Maintain a clean, safe and well organised working environment
• Communicate clearly with colleagues, raising concerns or incidents with a supervisor
• Monitor laboratory stock levels to reduce waste and maintain supplies
• Work flexibly across a 7 day service in line with team rotas

Person Specification Qualifications

• Understanding of, or willingness to learn, Good Manufacturing Practice and health and safety requirements
• Commitment to learning, development and doing things to the right standard

Experience

• Comfortable working with human blood and tissues in a controlled environment
• Able to work carefully and methodically, with strong attention to detail
• Confident communicating clearly, both verbally and in writing
• Able to use basic IT systems for data entry and record keeping
• A reliable team player who can manage their workload in a busy setting
