Job Description

The Environmental and Waste Advisor is responsible for monitoring and reporting on compliance with our Corporate and Divisional ISO 14001 management systems, waste obligations, contract requirements, and legislative obligations. This includes auditing and updating environmental and waste management systems.

Role Support

The role will support the Group SHEQ Compliance and Integration Manager:

  1. To fulfill his role as the Technically Competent Manager (TCM) for Waste within Power Private, and deputies for him in his absence.
  2. To support the Group SHEQ Compliance and Integration Manager during integrations and special projects.
  3. To assist during external sector scheme and ISO audits.

The role also provides guidance and support across the wider SHEQ team and operations.

Principal Accountabilities
  1. Monitor and audit compliance with ISO 14001 and contractual requirements.
  2. Ensure compliance with legislative obligations.
  3. Review and update environmental and waste management systems.
  4. As a WAMITAB Level 4 certified Waste Manager, oversee compliance related to waste permits and legislation.
  5. Develop and maintain an effective internal audit plan.
  6. Support Divisional SHEQ Heads and the Head of ESG with guidance and development.
  7. Coordinate with external ISO certification bodies.
  8. Assist in developing energy and carbon management reports and plans.
  9. Investigate environmental incidents and provide feedback.
  10. Support tender processes with environmental expertise.
  11. Assist operational teams in implementing and developing environmental management systems and risk controls.
  12. Develop internal communication and training modules.
  13. Liaise with authorities regarding licensing, permits, and incidents.
  14. Monitor and improve environmental management practices and compliance.
  15. Report findings and areas of improvement to senior management.
  16. Assist in preparing environmental reports and case studies.
  17. Utilize carbon accounting tools to monitor emissions.
  18. Support energy audits and related activities.
Deputising Responsibilities

When deputising, the Environmental & Waste Advisor must:

  1. Monitor regulatory updates and attend training.
  2. Manage permit renewals and compliance.
  3. Oversee storage, conduct checks, and ensure proper handling.
  4. Inspect storage areas and coordinate maintenance.
  5. Develop spill response plans and conduct drills.
  6. Maintain waste activity logs and report to authorities.
  7. Monitor for leaks, spills, and environmental impacts.
  8. Communicate with authorities and improve waste practices.
About You Qualifications & Memberships
  • IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH Certificate (preferred).
  • Full UK driving license.
  • IEMA membership (preferred).
  • WAMITAB Level 4 in waste management (or working towards).
  • ILM Level 5 Operations/Department Manager.
  • Relevant professional qualifications or memberships.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Proven experience in environmental and waste management.
  • Knowledge of utilities/maintenance sector.
  • Understanding of ISO 14001.
  • Experience in investigating environmental incidents.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining management systems.
  • Ability to present to senior leadership.
  • Risk management skills.
  • Capability to support critical projects and build stakeholder relationships.
  • Understanding of SHEQ policies and impact.
