Environment & Sustainability Advisor

Energy Infrastructure HSEQ & Sustainability

London (Hybrid) c. £85,000 + Bonus + Benefits

Permanent

Our client is a rapidly growing UK energy infrastructure business with an expanding portfolio of major energy projects across development, construction and operations. As the business continues to grow, they are looking to appoint an experienced Environment & Sustainability Advisor to join the Group HSEQ function.

Reporting directly to the Group HSEQ Director, this is a newly focused position offering broad exposure across the organisation and genuine ownership of environmental and sustainability performance. Rather than operating purely in an advisory capacity, you will have the opportunity to influence how environmental risks are managed and how sustainability is embedded across projects and operational assets throughout their lifecycle.

Working closely with Development, Project Services, Procurement, Operations and project teams, you will provide specialist environmental expertise across a diverse portfolio of UK energy infrastructure, with occasional exposure to European projects.

The Company

Our client is an ambitious energy infrastructure business operating across a growing portfolio of major UK projects. As the organisation moves through a significant period of expansion, the Group HSEQ function is developing its capabilities to support projects from early development and design through construction and into long-term operation.

This is an opportunity to join an organisation where environmental and sustainability considerations are becoming increasingly important to project delivery, investment and operational performance. The successful candidate will have visibility across the wider business and the opportunity to help shape environmental standards, systems and sustainability initiatives as the portfolio grows.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the company's environmental and sustainability specialist, providing practical guidance to development, construction and operations teams.
  • Maintain and continually improve the Environmental Management System, supporting ISO 14001 certification and ongoing assurance.
  • Manage environmental legal and compliance registers, ensuring compliance with permits, consents and planning conditions.
  • Review and support Environmental Management Plans, Construction Environmental Management Plans, Waste Management Plans and pollution prevention measures.
  • Provide environmental input throughout the full project lifecycle, from development and design through construction and operations.
  • Lead and support environmental audits, compliance evaluations and incident investigations across projects, sites, contractors and suppliers.
  • Develop sustainability and ESG metrics, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas reporting.
  • Support sustainability reporting and ESG information requirements for the Board, investors and lenders.
  • Coordinate environmental and sustainability improvement initiatives, including biodiversity commitments and environmental performance improvements.
  • Work directly with contractors and site teams to establish environmental standards and drive strong environmental performance.
  • Deliver environmental awareness, training and engagement across the organisation.
  • Support projects across the UK, with occasional involvement in European projects including Germany and Spain.
Experience & Qualifications
  • 7+ years' experience within an environmental or sustainability advisory position.
  • At least 2 years' site-based experience working for an asset owner or leading contractor.
  • Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation, permitting and compliance requirements.
  • Proven experience developing and maintaining an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
  • Experience managing environmental permits, consents and planning conditions across multiple projects or sites.
  • Strong understanding of legislation covering permitting, waste, discharge and abstraction, nuisance and contaminated land.
  • Experience with environmental aspects and impacts assessments and environmental management plans.
  • Knowledge of sustainability and ESG reporting, including Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
  • Understanding of biodiversity, protected species and Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Experience within energy, power, utilities, renewables, BESS, flexible generation, hydro, hydrogen or wider infrastructure.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Sustainability or a related discipline.
  • IEMA membership or working towards membership.
  • ISO 14001 Internal or Lead Auditor qualification.
  • CSCS Managers / Professionals card.

Chartered Environmentalist status, NEBOSH Environmental Management or additional ISO and carbon accounting qualifications would be advantageous.

Benefits
  • c. £85,000 basic salary
  • Performance-related bonus.
  • Company pension.
  • Private healthcare.
  • Travel and accommodation expenses where required.
  • Hybrid working from the London office.
  • Approximately 25% of time visiting project and operational sites.
  • Exposure to a growing portfolio of major UK energy infrastructure projects.
  • Occasional European travel, including Germany and Spain.
  • Opportunity to influence environmental and sustainability strategy across the full asset lifecycle.
Why Apply?

This is an opportunity to move beyond a traditional environmental advisory position and take genuine ownership of environmental and sustainability performance across a growing energy infrastructure portfolio.

You will have visibility across the full asset lifecycle, from development and design through construction and into operations, while working directly with senior stakeholders across HSEQ, Development, Project Services, Procurement and Operations.

For an experienced environmental professional looking to have a greater influence on how major energy infrastructure projects are developed, constructed and operated, this role offers significant scope to shape the function as the business continues to grow.
