Engineering Manager

Admiral Money are looking for an Engineering Managerto join their growing Specialist Mortgages team!

About Admiral Money

Admiral Money is an exciting, new division of Admiral Group. We have the freedom and innovation of a small start up with the security of a large parent company, Admiral.

The journey started when we launched unsecured personal loans in June 2017. We went on to be the first direct to consumer car finance provider in December 2017. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength and have some exciting plans for the future.

We're looking for people who are keen to learn, excited about getting stuck in and are ready for a challenge to help us to achieve our aim of creating a special lending business for our customers.

The Role

This role requires attendance at our Cardiff office on a quarterly basis.

As an Engineering Manager at Admiral Money, you'll lead the development and delivery of change initiatives on our Mortgage product platform, built on low-code and third-party software (notably FintechOS). You'll guide internal and external engineering teams, ensuring technical excellence, alignment with business goals, and high-quality outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and direction to third-party development teams, ensuring adherence to Admiral Money's quality standards.
  • Act as the technical subject matter expert (SME) for the core platform, supporting architectural decisions and resolving complex issues.
  • Review and approve technical designs to ensure alignment with best practices and architectural standards.
  • Leverage both low-code and traditional development approaches to deliver scalable, maintainable solutions.
  • Manage the software development lifecycle within the Admiral Money Engineering Framework.
  • Foster strong collaboration between internal teams and external partners, including offshore vendors.
  • Operate effectively in a matrix-managed environment, balancing priorities and managing interdependencies.
  • Contribute hands-on to delivery efforts when needed (up to 50% of the time).

Team & Culture

  • While this role does not initially include direct line management, future responsibilities may include leading a technical team.
  • Support team growth through coaching, mentoring, and skills development.
  • Champion an inclusive, values-driven culture aligned with Admiral's core principles.

Technical Delivery

  • Develop and support software solutions, including integrations, interfaces, and enhancements.
  • Collaborate with Architecture, Testing, and Change teams to define delivery roadmaps.
  • Lead agile-based technical delivery efforts, ensuring timely and high-quality outcomes.

Skills and Experience

Essential

  • Experience managing third-party vendors and offshore teams.
  • Passion for enabling others to succeed and grow.
  • Strong ownership of code quality, maintainability, and security.
  • Proven experience managing software projects using Agile methodologies.
  • Hands-on technical background in software development.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Experience in resource planning, risk management, and quality assurance.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative, innovative team environment.

Desirable

  • Experience in people management.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure).
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Proficiency in multiple programming languages (e.g., Python, Go, Java).
  • Experience with low-code platforms.
