Role Summary
The Engineering and Fleet Manager provides expert technical and operational leadership across fleet engineering, fleet management and vehicle compliance within the Ministry of Justice. This includes managing insurance, fuel card, accident, hire vehicle and EV transition obligations, ensuring fleet operations are safe, efficient, cost effective and fully aligned with relevant legislation, MoJ policy and Fleet Management Team standards.

Monday to Thursday: 08:00 - 16:00
Friday: 08:00 - 15:30
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver best practice technical advice to all fleet users.
- Provide effective fleet management advice within agreed resources and budget constraints.
- Maintain knowledge of vehicle legislation, engineering developments, environmental requirements and emerging technologies.
- Oversee vehicle design specifications, acquisition processes and delivery of fleet assets.
- Ensure efficient and environmentally responsible use of fleet vehicles, MHE and plant equipment.
- Promote use of fleet management data systems to improve performance and governance.
- Ensure adherence to Health and Safety at Work Act and all MoJ safety policies.
- Support the HS&T Manager with safe systems of work and risk assessments.
- Promote safe engineering practices and comply with MoJ Transport Policy & Procedure guidance.
- Report vehicle incidents, risks or non compliance promptly.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, contractors and service users.
- Identify opportunities for consolidation or optimisation of fleet activities.
- Support MoJ sustainability objectives, including alternative fuel vehicle assessment and implementation.
- Lead and plan delivery of future fleet projects and implement environmentally efficient solutions.
- Manage attendance, performance records and HR requirements for the team.
- Develop team capability through coaching, training and technical guidance.
- Produce, analyse and maintain fleet management information for decision making.
- Review fleet activities to identify improvements and efficiencies.
- Maintain accurate engineering compliance documentation.
Qualifications
- Engineering qualifications (e.g., IMI, IRTE, NVQ Level 3 or above in vehicle engineering) or equivalent military experience (e.g., REME).
- Proven experience in fleet engineering, vehicle management or a similar technical transport environment.
- Strong understanding of fleet legislation, safety standards and engineering best practice.
- Ability to provide technical guidance to specialists and non technical users.
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience managing or overseeing a vehicle/engineering workshop.
- Ability to analyse data, interpret technical reports and develop solutions.
- Experience within government or a regulated operational environment.
- Experience with alternative fuel or low emission vehicle technologies.
- Experience using fleet data systems, Excel and Teams.
- Knowledge of environmental and sustainability considerations relating to fleet operations.
