Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Emergency Department Administrator to join the UCLH Emergency Department Team. The role involves booking and registering patients at either the adults or paediatric reception desks or providing general patient support and admin support across the department. The post holder will be expected to work independently, make decisions using their own initiative to ensure the flow of patients coming into the emergency department. The Trust runs a 24 hour service, 365 nights a year and staff will be expected to work a shift pattern including weekends and nights.

Main duties of the job
  • Registering patients on the electronic patient record system efficiently.
  • Assisting and supporting the administrative team, including dealing with telephone calls and resolving simple enquiries for patients, their carers and visitors.
  • Carrying out designated administrative tasks to support the wider Emergency Department.
  • Providing an excellent patient service to all patients attending the Emergency Department.
Person specification Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Educated to GCSE level or equivalent, including Grade C or higher in English.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare, Customer Care or Business Administration, or equivalent.
Experience
  • Demonstrable knowledge of administrative procedures at a high level of competence gained through training and experience.
  • Proven experience of working in an office environment (front of house role).
  • Previous NHS or healthcare experience.
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to deal with the public in person and on the phone.
  • Ability to support and reassure patients/carers in distress; understanding the importance of maintaining confidentiality.
  • Competence with software programmes including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.
