Job Description
Service Care Legal are currently recruiting for an Education Lawyer to join a local authority in the South London area. This role is heavily focused on education law, with a particular emphasis on school closures and amalgamations. The successful candidate will provide high-quality legal advice and representation across the council on these sensitive and complex matters.
ROLE: Education Lawyer
LOCATION: South London
CONTRACT: 3 months (with likely extension), 35 hours per week
RATE: £50ph LTD (£44.51ph PAYE inc. holiday pay, £39.72ph PAYE exc. holiday pay)
OFFICE ATTENDANCE: Required once per fortnight
The Role

The Role
- Provide expert legal advice on all matters relating to education law, with a strong focus on school closures, reorganisations, and amalgamations
- Draft and review legal documents related to school restructuring
- Advise on legislative changes and case law relevant to school operations and governance
- Represent the council in legal proceedings and public inquiries related to education matters
- Collaborate with internal departments and senior officers to support strategic educational objectives
- Maintain relationships with stakeholders including schools, legal bodies, and external organisations
- Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or FILEX
- Extensive experience in education law, particularly school closures and restructuring
- Familiarity with relevant legislation, statutory guidance, and local government frameworks
- Proven ability to manage complex education cases with minimal supervision
- Experience within a local authority or public sector setting is highly desirable
- Some experience in employment law may be beneficial but is not the primary focus of this role
