The role of the Editorial Manager will help oversee the day-to-day management of the overall editorial staffing needs at the Daily Mail and Metro.
The Managing Editors' office is responsible for building the rotas, managing absence through Workday, recruitment, staff appraisals, monthly budget spend and managing the overall pressures that come with working in a 24-hour news operation.
Office administration and people management are essential elements of the role, and some journalistic experience/training and knowledge of working in a fast-moving news operation is desirable.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, be able to prioritise work to meet tight deadlines, be proactive in enhancing the efficiency of day-to-day tasks and have exceptional organisational skills.
The role reports to the Assistant Managing Editor and will also support the Associate Managing Editor & Group Editorial Safety Officer. Additional responsibilities will include liaising with the Group Managing Editor & Editorial Director DMGT, Executive Group Managing Editor and the Daily Mail's Parliamentary team.
Core responsibilities- Complete weekly administrative tasks: submitting casual and staff timesheets, downloading, checking and updating reports, sending the editorial weekend staffing list and new starter lists.
- Oversee and take ownership of department rotas, including drafting and publishing rotas, holiday management and ensuring staffing requirements are met.
- Drafting and management of freelance retainer contracts, acting as a liaison between the Group Managing Editor & Editorial Director, DMGT; the relevant department head and the individual or agent as required. Keeping on top of all contractual changes, filing, tracking of expiry and any other ad-hoc requests as required.
- Work closely with HR and Finance on contract requests, other ad hoc queries and administrative changes.
- Assist with recruitment: work with the talent team to oversee recruitment processes, ensure job postings are live the relevant and assist section editors with scheduling interviews, trial shifts and offers of employment.
- On-boarding new staff: processing them in the workday system, completing contract requests, arranging IT equipment, building passes, right to work documents, systems training and staff inductions, and any other relevant training.
- Assist with individual department's staffing needs. Liaise with department heads and HR on staffing matters.
- Organising the Parliamentary team's attendance at the annual party conferences, including: organising hotels and travel arrangements, liaising with on-site IT support, conference feed-hire, booking desk spaces, organising accreditation and assisting with the conference diary.
- Managing the Daily Mail's entries to industry awards including: circulating the relevant communications, collating and uploading the entries, supporting with deadlines, vetting entries with the Group Managing Editor & Editorial Director DMGT and Executive Group Managing Editor, organising seating plans and coordinating invitations, and any ad-hoc tasks that may arise.
- Oversee adherence to company policies and be a point of contact for this.
- Cover and support the wider team in rota/department management and ad hoc requests.
- Being on-call on a rotational basis.
As you learn and take on tasks successfully, the scope of the role will widen to include taking on further tasks for department management, and many other key responsibilities to ensure the smooth-running of the editorial operation.
Requirements- Experience in a multi disciplined role across operations for teams of staff.
- Process driven with a strong understanding of workflows and operational processes.
- Excellent communication skills across all levels.
- Experience in using cloud based software such as Workday or similar.
- Being cross functional and working well within a team.
- Newsroom experience is desired but not essential.
