Job Description
The role

We're entering the next phase of growth for IF and looking for a Director to grow our senior team and further our mission of being a force of positive change across our industry.

The message we hear about how important and urgent IF's work is for supporting organisations create trustworthy product and services is widening across new industries. Your role will be to help translate IF's vision and expert capabilities into a compelling offering.

You will combine overseeing projects, working closely with projects leads and teams to deliver exceptional work, together with owning new business and growth efforts. You will also contribute to wider company initiatives, including hiring, team development, and marketing.

Expertise
  • You will be a practitioner and we're flexible about what your practice expertise is (product, design, research, strategy, technology). You won't be full-time hands on on projects but you will provide deep thinking, practical support and leadership, working closely with project leads.

  • You will ideally bring expertise of building trustworthy products and services, however we're openminded to what this looks like. What's more important to us is your curiosity and ability to understand the way we approach these challenges, and ability to hold opinions.

Project delivery
  • Across projects (1-2 at a time), you will strategically guide and support teams through discovery, design, prototyping and build phases to design impactful products and services that answer pressing challenges in technology and society.

  • You will hold the vision and story for what the project solution could be, grounded in pragmatism and decisiveness, and steeped in IF's deep expertise.

  • You will manage the inevitable trade offs required to deliver outcomes that are commercially viable and strategically aligned.

Business development
  • You will originate and respond to incoming new business, building relationships across industries and widening the reach of the IF brand to make sure we continue to be the go to partner for the work that we do.

  • You will work with teams to extend work or start new streams, further developing strategic relationships across clients and opening up opportunities for IF to play a significant role across programmes of work.

  • You will contribute to IF's thought leadership content: writing blogs, conceptualising frameworks based on our continued findings, and growing our set of tools used by practitioners globally.

The company
  • Through your work overseeing teams and industry defining outcomes, you will continue to define great work at IF, ensuring insights and learnings are shared across the company.

  • You will identify skills and capabilities for our network and permanent hires, ensuring we're building brilliant teams and maintaining our high bar for talent.

  • You will coach and give regular feedback to teams, driving performance through our people and supporting their progression while at IF.

About you
  • You have a track record of overseeing projects and teams. This is a critical component of this role and we require demonstrable experience of this.

  • You're a skilled practitioner and, while not as hands on anymore, you understand what it takes to deliver great work and that you can't be too removed from the detail.

  • You have a proven record of successful business development efforts and a developed toolkit to increase your chances of bringing value to IF's growth quickly.

  • You're highly experienced in running successful client engagement activities, understanding the value these moments create for the work and new business opportunities.

  • You've been responsible for project managing projects, including budgets and resourcing. You will have support across these activities, however we require all of our senior team to understand what good looks like to reduce friction and risk across projects.

  • You're a low ego, compassionate individual who wants to work hard within an environment that genuinely cares about its people and the impact we have on the world.

  • You're a positive influence within work cultures. You bring focus and clarity to teams, and cultivate and support how values show up in work and behaviours.

  • You're a brilliant communicator: able to craft compelling stories, present work and thinking with clarity of thought, and write succinctly.

  • You enable healthy team dynamics which creates an environment that surfaces critical opinions across the team to support good decision making.

Your location

IF is based in London and we're looking for someone based here or within commutable distance. We're largely a remote first team and currently spend Wednesdays together in a studio next to Hoxton Overground station. We also spend some time with clients but plan this to be infrequent and valuable. Client facing work requires flexibility but we're designing a setup to enable deep work and balance.

The hiring process

You're likely to meet one member of the team at each stage because we're a small team. We may use an AI notetaking service to assist your interviewer in capturing the conversation.

We will ask that you walk us through some work at each stage, varying in depth and focus depending on the stage and who you're meeting. We'll share more during the process so that you can prepare.

  1. An initial 30 minute introductory call to discuss the role, your experience and ensure alignment.

  2. A 60 minute interview to discuss your background in more detail. We'll dig into your work and also ask some questions based on real world IF context.

  3. A take home task, followed by a 60 minute debrief session. This allows you to get close to our work and the IF team to better understand your thinking.

  4. A 60 minute interview to have a final chat about your experience, as well as your ways of working, motivations and working at IF.

Salary and benefits

The salary band for this role is £110,000-125,000. We'll assess experience throughout the interview process to determine where within this band you would join. Our benefits also include:

  • A time off allowance of 25 days each calendar year, in addition to bank holidays (which typically tops this up to around 33 days).

  • Christmas closure. The dates for this differ each year but we're offline between Christmas and New Year to enjoy this busy holiday season.

  • We also aim to schedule a week long summer closure each year, to all be offline during the warmer months, putting on the collective breaks and pausing all notifications.

  • 5 days of paid emergency carers leave. Last minute caring responsibilities need to be prioritised and this leave is there to support you taking the time you need.

  • Flexible Fridays. We try to keep this day meeting free to facilitate a sense of calm and completion to end the week. And once work is finished, clock off. There's no expectation to work the whole day if the work is done.

  • Thoughtful approach to sync vs. async work. To deliver our expertise we must carve out time for deep work. How we communicate, document and spend time together is thoughtfully designed and iterated upon.
