The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic, results orientated, self-driven team player to join our Products group: developing and supporting UGL's own electronics products, supporting manufacture of licensed products, evaluating and supporting resale products; as well as contributing to major infrastructure projects with a Tier-1 engineering company. Key Tasks
Produce designs, technical specifications, test plans, procedures, drawings and other design documentation
Assist an electronics workshop in the servicing of equipment by: locating information, providing guidance for advanced fault diagnosis, examining repair records for trending failures, designing modifications for functional changes and substituting obsolete components, and maintaining existing manufacture and test documentation.
Produce cost estimates for new designs and refurbishment works, including engineering time estimates, assembly and test time estimates, and obtaining quotes for PCAs and other materials.
Evaluate and audit Contract Electronics Manufacturers and other suppliers
Represent UGL for with our clients for advanced technical support and on-train/on-site testing activities
Other Responsibilities:
Perform system analysis to assist in ascertaining the most appropriate design strategy for each product/project
Circuit design, Schematic capture and PCB layouts; with the highest of care to achieve our goal of zero-issue first PCB runs.
Embedded software development for microcontroller-based designs, including: architecture design; selection of devices, programming tools and languages; debugging on the target hardware, configuration management, documentation and user manuals; debugging of existing code; reviewing existing code to understand functional behaviour of products.
Undertake prototyping, first of type testing and fault-finding activities to validate designs and modifications; and implement best value changes where necessary
Develop documentation to provide accurate configuration control, including: Bill of Materials, assembly instructions, and production test procedures
Development of cost-effective test jigs and workbenches
Develop client-facing documentation including Operations and Maintenance manuals and training materials
Investigate product in-service failures/problems/incidents, including: analysis of records, diagnosis of faults on railways and onboard rolingstock
Self-manage tasks to ensure all deliverables are completed on schedule, working with other team members where necessary to integrate the designs into larger systems, co-ordinate with workshop resources and ensure the projects meets agreed milestones in a professional and cost-effective manner
Manage costs of projects, including consideration of: the most cost-effective technical solutions to hardware and software design, manufacturability, reuse of existing design, capabilities within the team, safety, quality and reliability.

Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Computer, Telecommunications or Mechatronic Engineering or related discipline, and able to obtain Member status with Engineers Australia.
2+ years experience in electronics design , including:
o Hands-on assembly and test of prototypes, and troubleshooting circuits
o Schematic entry and PCB Layout (Altium Designer is preferred)
o Software development for embedded microcontrollers in C
Experience in other software languages including Assembler, AHDL, VHDL, scripting languages is desirable
Experience in rail, defence, mining or aerospace industry is an advantage
Experience with Networks, Virtual Machines and Linux is an advantage
Experience in project management or project coordination experience is an advantage
Experience with CENELEC System Engineering standards EN 50126, EN 50129, 50128/50716; to perform development of systems which are safe, SFAIRP; using tools such as Hazard Assessments, FMECA, FTA, software development to SIL is an advantage
