Job overview The Post Holder will provide specialist Clinical Psychology input to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Southmead Hospital.

The post holder will provide psychological expertise for the care of patients at any stage of their ICU care pathway but with a main focus on the MDT follow-up clinic. This role encompasses the support of staff and relatives, the promotion of psychologically informed and sophisticated systems of care and service development. It will involve a substantial proportion of close clinical liaison within the MDT. The role includes:

Main duties of the job a. The team specialises in the care of critical illness and traumatic injuries, but also long-term conditions and cancer care. As such, the post holder is expected to have a level of professional training and experience to complete highly complex assessments and interventions with patients without the need for close clinical supervision. The post holder is personally accountable for their clinical decisions and is required to ensure appropriate supervision arrangements within NBT to support this responsibility. Every member of the department is expected to prioritise and manage their own face-to-face work with their clients whilst also balancing this, through a process of line management, with the collective responsibilities and goals of both the department and North Bristol NHS Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities b. The ICU team and the Clinical Health Psychology service are actively engaged in research and development and quality improvement work within the trust, sometimes in partnership with universities and other parties. Members of the department are expected to co-operate with and adhere to the relevant research protocols as appropriate.

The specific areas of duty and responsibility in this post are detailed below and will be interpreted through a job plan. This is agreed at least annually with the line manager to take account of varying demands and service changes. The job plan may be revised more frequently as circumstances change.

Clinical

1. To provide psychological expertise in the follow-up care of patients who have been treated in ICU, primarily through MDT clinics, but including all clinical matters that both precede and follow-on from the clinic appointments.

2. Undertake specialist psychological assessment and intervention of individuals and their families under the care of the MDT in ICU.

3. Co-ordinate the psychological care of patients in ICU with the Psychology lead for the area, ensuring liaison with other team members, working to overall practice standards and co-ordination of care provided by the MDT. Observing all relevant service standards in the provision of interventions, linking with referring consultants and others. This will on occasion involve liaison and consultancy to other health professionals working with patients both within and outside ICU e.g. Mental Health Liaison Team and Community Mental Health Teams, Social Services and other agencies and psychological consultation for the nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapists and medical practitioners.

4. Take responsibility for ensuring the quality and safety of psychological input in all aspect of work. This may include partnership working, for example with primary care professionals or patient volunteers, where the post holder is expected to understand and maintain agreed terms of co-working and balance of responsibilities.

5. To undertake other work as demands vary in agreement with the line manager/ head of psychology in ASCR-NMSK. This will usually be through revisions of the Job Plan. Similarly, to act as a resource to the wider health care community on psychological matters relating to severe illness or injury.

6. Undertake clinical governance processes, service meetings, clinical audit, the development and observation of service standards and modernisation initiatives, observing local and national guidance integrated within clinical activity as appropriate.

7. Participate in the advancement of the North Bristol NHS Trust strategy and objectives.

8. Provide specialist supervision to trainee Clinical Psychologists on placement from regional doctorial training courses, coordinating the provision of placements with the organisation of psychologists across NBT under the Trust Advisor for Psychology.

Professional

1. Participate in the professional organisation of Clinical Psychologists within North Bristol NHS Trust including the support of the regional training of Clinical Psychologists with clinical placement supervision, research supervision, and clinical teaching coordinated through the Psychology Advisor for NBT.

2. Participate in performance review with the line manager at set intervals as part of professional development.

3. The post holder will fully participate in clinical governance processes, service meetings, clinical audit, the development and observation of service standards and improvement initiatives, observing local and national guidance.

4. Remain up-to-date on relevant issues in the psychological care in the specialist areas and national and local policy matters relevant to professional work.

5. Undertake regular clinical supervision from within the Clinical Health Psychology Service, working to a written contract reviewed annually in accordance with supervision policy for clinical psychologists employed by NBT.

6. Contribute to research and development within the department.

7. Adhere to the Professional Code of Conduct as laid down by the British Psychological Society, Division of Clinical Psychology and the HCPC.

8. Maintain accurate and up to date records as appropriate in agreement with the head of service, generating written reports/letters describing relevant information to be read by the referrers, and patients alike, in accordance with service standards.

9. Manage own caseload following formulation, planning, appropriate interventions and monitoring progress, as may be requested by head of department.
