Contract: Temporary Assignment via Brook Street
Start Date: as soon as checks are done
End Date: October 2026 (with a view to extend)
Salary: £13.31 per hour (Weekly Pay)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 17:00 (37 hours per week) - Fully Office Based
We are looking for a dedicated Operational Support Officer (AO) to join HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) at St Albans Magistrates' Court. This is a varied, fast-paced role supporting the day-to-day operation of the court through a combination of courtroom support, customer service, and administrative duties, helping to ensure hearings run efficiently.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare courtrooms before hearings and ensure they are ready for use
- Support court hearings through ushering and courtroom duties
- Provide front-of-house and public-facing support, assisting court users, visitors, legal professionals, and judiciary staff
- Call parties into court and provide guidance throughout the court building
- Process court documentation and maintain accurate records
- Scan, transfer, file, and upload documents onto HMCTS systems
- Liaise with internal teams, legal representatives, and members of the public
- Swear in witnesses where required
- Provide general administrative support across court operations
- Handle sensitive and confidential information professionally
This is a strictly office-based role; no remote working is available.
Required Skills & Experience- Strong administrative and organisational skills with excellent attention to detail
- Previous customer service or public-facing experience
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office applications
- Professional and positive attitude in a busy environment
- Excellent communication skills, both face-to-face and over the telephone
- Ability to work independently, use initiative, and meet deadlines
- Comfortable working with sensitive information and in a court environment
- A DBS check is required; we will assist with the application process.
- Successful candidates will be required to complete HMCTS security clearance before starting.
- Start dates are subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks.
