About the Project
John Holland, in partnership with McConnell Dowell (Joint Venture), is delivering the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project in Far North Queensland. This innovative project involves converting a disused gold mine into a pumped storage hydroelectric power facility-the first of its kind in the world.
The project includes converting two mine pits into reservoirs and constructing underground infrastructure such as a large powerhouse cavern, waterway shafts, and tunnels to transfer water between reservoirs, generating power during peak periods and returning water during off-peak times.
Funded by ARENA as part of its Advancing Renewables Program, this project is a gamechanger for the clean energy industry worldwide, introducing a new approach to large-scale energy storage.
