Job Description

We are actively recruiting for a fixed term salaried doctor for two to three sessions per week.

We are a proud training practice, with a strong ethos of training, teaching and developing staff including medical students, F2 and ST2 and ST3 placements and would encourage anyone with training ambitions to apply. The practice has a history of our salaried doctors working in a training and educational capacities.

You will join our existing clinical team comprising six GP Partners, five associate doctors and an Advanced Nurse Practitioner as well as our dedicated nursing team comprising a Nurse Practitioner, three practice nurses, two HCAs and two Phlebotomists providing high quality care for our patients in Totton.

The practice has patients, 12 consulting rooms, 5 treatment rooms and a fully equipped minor surgery suite. We also have an on-site pharmacy, physiotherapist and host psychological therapy clinics and speech and language rehabilitation clinics.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion. The post holder will also:

  • Make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems
  • Assess the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems
  • Screen patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness
  • Contribute to the attainment of all quality indicators (QoF)
  • Complete insurance and other medical reports
  • Contribute toward the enhanced access rota (one session per month)

We are located on the edge of the New Forest and in close proximity to the coast and the City of Southampton. There are excellent transport links to surrounding areas and easy access to airports, train stations and motorways with existing staff commuting from Winchester, Salisbury and Bournemouth.

There is a good choice of local primary and secondary schools nearby for any applicants with school aged children.

We work closely with our primary care colleagues in Totton as part of the Totton Primary Care Network and have jointly developed a Primary Care Mental Health Team, a paramedic Home Visiting Service and have a strong Primary Care Pharmacy Team.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will make him/her-self available to undertake a variety of duties including surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visiting patients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing with queries, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion. In addition, the post holder will be expected to:

Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation

Assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems

Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness

In consultation with patients and in line with current practice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health

Providing counselling and health education

Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseload and referring to other care providers as appropriate

Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes to agreed standards

Compiling and issuing computer-generated acute and repeat prescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible)

Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribing formulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate

Contributing to the attainment of all quality indicators (QoF) and any local or national initiative that the practice takes part in

Completing insurance and other medical reports as required

In general the post-holder will be expected to undertake all the normal clinical duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working within primary care.

Other Responsibilities within the Organisation:

Contribution toward the enhanced access rota which will require scheduling of a session per month toward the enhanced access requirement. Clinics will be scheduled for late starts on these days

Awareness of and compliance with all relevant practice policies/guidelines, eg prescribing, confidentiality, data protection, health and safety

A commitment to life long learning and audit to ensure evidence-based best practice

Contributing to evaluation/audit and clinical standard setting within the organisation

Contributing to the development of computer-based patient records

Contributing to the summarising of patient records and Read Coding patient data

Attending training and events organised by the practice or other agencies, where appropriate.

Qualifications
  • Fully qualified GP with GMC registration
  • Annual appraisal and evidence of revalidation
