Job overview We have an opportunity to join our large diagnostic and interventional imaging unit as it expands to provide services as part of a tertiary referral and major trauma centre development. In addition, we are proud to be able to say that our IR Service has recently been granted Exemplar status by the BSIR in 2020.
We support a large range of sub-specialities including vascular surgery, neurosurgery, oncology, trauma, renal
medicine and complex abdominal surgery. We would like to invite you to be a part of our exciting personnel and
equipment expansion, including state of the art CT, PETCT, hybrid interventional theatre, and a brand-new 4th MRI
scanner suite. We are one of the largest providers of healthcare in the area offering new 'state of the art' facilities and
have a complement of over 900 beds for a local population of 390,000 and a regional population of 1.5 million.
The post holder will be expected to provide a comprehensive interventional service, including acute and hyper-acute commitments, alongside the existing team of interventional radiologists.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide interventional services in vascular and nonvascular radiology,
with a component of general radiology.
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in a Vascular Interventional on-call rota currently 1 in 10.
An interest in body/general CT reporting, would be supported and encouraged
Main duties of the job It is anticipated that the appointee will support and enhance this service, by taking a leading role within the directorate,
and developing subspecialty expertise. This post will support expansion of current services and the development of
Regional Trauma and Vascular Services and will predominantly be based at Royal Preston Hospital; however, the
appointee will be expected to share the same role as the existing consultants, including supporting day case IR and
on-call at a spoke site. A proposed new model of care is currently under discussion for Lancashire South Cumbria &
Wigan which will include East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust along with already covered network sites such as
UHMB, BTH & WWL.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals has a well-developed Interventional Radiology department, consisting of a state-of-theart Philips Azurion Flexmove suite, 3 further intervention rooms, 2 of which have vascular capability, and a purposebuilt hybrid suite with Siemens Artis Zeego interventional angiography suite.
There is a 7-bedded dedicated interventional radiology day unit, as well as specialised interventional radiographers and nurses to support daytime working and on-call, along with established advanced practitioners to support the vascular access service.
There are now 4 multislice CT scanners, 3 1.5T MRI scanners and a specialised extremity MRI scanner. A well-developed nuclear medicine department is on site, with two gamma cameras. PET-CT is also provided on site.
Working for our organisation In addition, Lancashire Teaching Hospitals forms one of the major acute Trusts in the Northwest with all of the usual
specialties on site as well as being a Tertiary Centre for Lancashire & South Cumbria in the departments of
Neurosciences, Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Burns and Renal Medicine. The Trust was recently declared a regional
Trauma Centre.
Undergraduate medical student teaching commenced in 2003 and the Trust has active and developing links with the Universities of Manchester and Central Lancashire and there are medical students in thehospital from 3rd to 5th year. Considerable opportunities exist for research and development, which are integral to teaching hospital status.
