Job overview

The successful candidates will have a major interest in orthopaedic trauma management with particular focus on pelvic and acetabular trauma. An elective interest will also be accommodated assuming it fits with the needs of the department. They will be one of 2 lead trauma consultants within one of the 4 orthopaedic trauma teams, each team being made up of 4 consultants. The more senior trauma lead consultants within each clinical team will provide mentorship to the successful
candidates and joint operating is encouraged for more complex cases.

They will be based mainly at the University Hospital site and will take on the continued management of multiply injured patients. The successful candidates will have a central role in the ongoing development of trauma pathways and the trauma service as a whole. The on-call rota is approximately 1 in 8 and the successful candidate will be expected to take a full part in the adult trauma rota.

Main duties of the job

Consultant appointments are made to the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust; as services are developed and changed, the base of posts may alter and any employee of the Trust will be expected, within an agreed clinical strategy, to move his/her sessions as the service requires.

In particular, your attention is drawn to the fact that the post advertised may include routine evening and week-end working as part of the working arrangements for the new hospital the details of which are currently under discussion. The specific scheduling of such activities would be subject to mutual agreement and may be agreed at a later date in the future.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Each weekday (Mon-Thursday) is covered by a team of 4 consultants who undertake new patient and follow-up fracture clinics at both Coventry and Rugby as well as immediate care of the multipleinjured patient in the resuscitation room on a rotating basis. The On-call commitment at weekends is 1 in 8 and includes, 8am-8pm trauma lists on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There are 2 consultants and 1 SpR on call each weekend to cover these duties. For weekend on call commitments specialist
trauma colleagues are available for support as required. As a major trauma centre, support services are all available for trauma purposes including imaging, specific T&O fully staffed trauma theatres
and job planned weekend therapy services. The on-call rota attracts a 5% supplement for unpredictable work. There are evening organisational meetings at 6pm and then again at 10pm (usually by phone) to plan the following days trauma list and the consultants are called back in after
7pm on their on-call night approximately on 1 in 4 occasions to deal with emergency cases. The Emergency department takes an increasing number of poly-trauma patients and has its own helipad for the Coventry and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Service.

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in relevant specialty. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of both emergency and elective orthopaedics. Trauma Fellowship with focus on pelvic and acetabular reconstruction Demonstrable commitment to a career in trauma surgery
  • Experience in fix and replace techniques for acetabular fractures Ability to perform total hip arthroplasty for trauma
Knowledge & Skills
  • Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice. Understanding of the Clinical Governance process. Ability to lead, communicate, liaise and negotiate with others Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service. Ability to motivate, innovate and support staff of all disciplines Ability to organise and manage out patient priorities, waiting times/lists. Ability to manage and lead clinical team. Competent in basic information technology.
