Job Description

Liaison Psychiatry Service is seeking an enthusiastic, permanent, full-time Consultant Psychiatrist in Liaison Psychiatry.

The Liaison Psychiatry Service provides specialist care at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH), Princess Royal Hospital (PRH), and the community hospital of Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Oswestry (RJAH).

The focus is to deliver timely and comprehensive assessments, interventions, and treatments to service users and their families or carers, where a functional or organic mental disorder is suspected or evident. The 'community' served by this post includes the population within the general hospitals.

Main duties of the job

You will:

  • Provide a timely and flexible response to referrals to meet the demands of PRH/RSH hospitals.
  • Work with various groups attending or admitted to the acute hospital setting, including:
  • People who have self-harmed
  • Individuals with physical and psychological consequences of alcohol/substance misuse
  • Frail elderly people with possible delirium, depression, or dementia
  • People with known severe mental illness, particularly during relapse
  • Patients admitted with primarily physical health symptoms that may have psychological or social causes
  • Vulnerable groups such as the homeless, individuals experiencing personality difficulties, or those subject to domestic abuse or violence

Provide comprehensive mental health assessments, assist with diagnosis, care planning, discharge planning, risk assessment and management, and signposting to appropriate services.

Deliver mental health training to hospital staff to raise awareness of mental health conditions.

Collaborate closely with other services and organizations to ensure seamless mental health care and develop appropriate care pathways for onward referral.
