Consultant Psychiatrist, Liaison - RSCH Service - 12 Month FTC

We're looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Liaison Psychiatry Team at Royal Surrey County Hospital. This is a 12-month fixed-term post focused on supporting adults with urgent or complex mental health needs during their time in hospital.

You'll lead the care of working age adults, working alongside a multidisciplinary team including nurses, psychologists and doctors. The service provides assessments, treatment and support to people seen in A&E or admitted to hospital wards, helping them get the right care quickly and safely.

You'll be part of a well established and supportive team working under a semi ageless model. While you'll focus on adults of working age, you'll work closely with our Older Adults Consultant and other clinical colleagues to ensure joined up care across the hospital.

Main duties of the job

This appointment is for a full time 1.0 WTE Fixed Term Consultant Psychiatrist who will be responsible for providing Liaison Psychiatry input to the Working Age Liaison Psychiatry Service in RSCH.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the rapidly expanding Liaison Psychiatry services of Surrey & Borders NHS Foundation Trust.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full medical registration with a licence to practice.
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act (or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent.
  • MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
  • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications.
  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.
Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience
  • Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High Quality Care for All).
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio psycho social perspective and wide medical knowledge.
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others.
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
  • Experience working with various patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across different care settings, including community, inpatient, and Specialty teams.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric provision.
  • Published audit or research projects.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months.
  • Approved clinician status or able to achieve within three months of appointment.
Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning
  • Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high quality care.
  • Skills and sensitivity in negotiating with patients, relatives, and other professionals where opinions differ.
  • A high level ability to effectively communicate complex and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers, and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS at both written and oral levels.
  • Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post.
