The Evelina London Children's Hospital (ELCH) will appoint an 8 PA consultant to support the neurology department in its provision of acute inpatient and long term outpatient care to children with neurological disorders within the South East Thames region. This role will take a major part in the delivery of complex epilepsy services at ELCH and within the South East Thames Epilepsy Network.

Main duties of the job
  • The post-holder will undertake general paediatric neurology and complex epilepsy clinics at ELCH and support the regional clinic model which provides direct referral pathways for children with epilepsy managed jointly with special interest general paediatricians in the South East Thames region of England.
  • The General Neurology remit will support the strategic direction of the Children's Neuroscience Department and ensure the incumbent remains abreast of developments in Paediatric Neurology.
  • The incumbent will participate in the Paediatric Neurology on call rota for ELCH. This is approximately 1 in 9 basis for a week in service. For this on call week all elective activity will be cancelled. Non resident supervision and attendance will be required.
About us

The Children's Neurosciences department provides a tertiary service including an integrated and comprehensive neurology, rehabilitation and neurodisability service for children and their families from South East Thames and beyond, serving a total population of over 9 million people.

We work closely with our Neurosurgical colleagues at Kings College Hospital to ensure a comprehensive Paediatric Neurosciences service is managed within Kings Health Partners.

Every year, 2,500 inpatients and more than 7,000 outpatients are seen within the Children's Neurosciences service. Services are provided from a recently refurbished purpose designed outpatient department in the South Wing of St Thomas' Hospital together with facilities in ELCH. Inpatient, neurophysiology and neuroradiology facilities are in the main Evelina Children's Hospital located on the St Thomas' site.

Person Specification Professional Qualifications
  • Eligible for full UK GMC/GDC registration and a Licence to Practice.
  • On GDC/GMC Specialist Register for Paediatric Neurodisability or within six months of attaining CCT or equivalent.
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent.
  • Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application.
Clinical Experience
  • Experience working in a paediatric neuroscience centre with 24/7 acute neurology service (3 years).
  • Experience working in a complex epilepsy service at least 12 months covering ketogenic diet, VNS, epilepsy surgery.
  • Consultant level experience delivering both essential criteria.
  • Post CCT fellowship in complex epilepsy service.
Clinical Skills
  • Clinical skills for managing acute and chronic neurological conditions, particularly epilepsy.
  • Valid BLS Training.
  • Experience in MDT assessments of children with complex epilepsy considered for non pharmacological treatments and surgery.
  • Valid APLS and NLS.
Audit Management & IT
  • Clear track record of clinical governance, audit, management and IT skills.
  • Understanding of principles of audit.
Research, Teaching Skills & Experience
  • Track record of research, publications, presentations and understanding of research ethics.
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
  • Specialty specific research activity.
  • Higher Academic Qualifications.
Leadership/Management Skills
  • Communication: ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; build rapport, listen, persuade/negotiation.
