Job Description

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a consultant in respiratory medicine. The role supports the sustainability of respiratory services in Gloucestershire, including asthma services. Closing date: 19 July 2026

Main Duties of the Job

Respiratory medicine has been identified as the vanguard service for the Strategic Transformation Programme for Gloucestershire. This post will involve cross county appointments with activities on both sites and, subject to the candidate's skills and interest, opportunities to work in the community.

The successful candidate will participate equally in the departmental ward, hot and on call rota and will be able to develop another subspecialty interest, balanced with the needs of the department.

About Us

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust (GHNHSFT) was formed in April 2002 and became a Foundation Trust in July 2004. We provide acute services from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester and Cheltenham General Hospital. In collaboration with Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust (GHCNHSFT) we provide oncology services across Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and parts of Powys and Worcestershire. Our workforce is almost 8,000 strong, delivering outstanding patient centred, high quality care across a range of clinical areas.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Assess and review patients and perform procedures as required.
  • Support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Ensure timely and effective communication with primary care colleagues, including using the Trust's electronic discharge summary system.
  • Provide on call support, remain contactable and available when on call.

Education and Training:

  • Provide conditions for improved training opportunities in line with national and local recommendations.
  • Participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
  • Assist and participate with the development of postgraduate training for F1s, F2s, core trainees, SpRs, StRs and other staff as appropriate.

Clinical Governance:

  • Undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies.
  • Adhere to the Trust's Adverse Clinical Incident Policy.

Teamwork:

  • Work within the framework of team decisions.
  • Adopt a whole systems approach to working with the wider hospital and health community.
  • Show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility.

Accountability:

  • The post holder is immediately accountable to the Specialty Director for Respiratory and Cardiology, with line management from the Chief of Service for Medicine and the Medical Director.
  • Has a general duty of care for own health, safety and wellbeing and that of colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital.
Person Specification Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration and a licence to practise.
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for General or Respiratory Medicine via CCT or CESR (CP). Proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date within 6 months of interview.
  • CESR or European Community Rights.
Clinical Experience
  • Respiratory and G(I)M experience through most or all of training.
  • Demonstrated additional experience and interest in thoracic malignancy, interstitial lung disease or ventilation.
Management and Administrative Skills
  • Evidence of participation in Audit and Clinical Governance programmes.
  • Ability to manage and lead a clinical team.
  • IT skills including database management and word processing.
  • Attendance on a management course.
Training Experience
  • Evidence of ability to teach clinical and generic skills.
  • Evidence of applying research outcomes to clinical and organisational problems.
  • Training in teaching skills.
  • Certificate of education.
  • Evidence of involvement in undergraduate education.
  • Evidence of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • Evidence of supervising postgraduate research.
Research Experience
  • Ability to appraise research critically and apply research outcomes to clinical and organisational problems.
  • Ability to supervise junior staff undertaking research projects.
