Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the Royal National Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital & Eastman Dental Hospital for a 9PA Consultant in Paediatric Dentistry. The post is based at the Royal National ENT & Eastman Dental Hospitals in London, part of the Specialist Hospitals Board of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will join consultant colleagues as part of a wider established team providing a full range of paediatric dental services, postgraduate training and research. Candidates will need to be on the Specialist Register of the General Dental Council for Paediatric Dentistry by date of appointment.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work 9PA's within the Paediatric Dental Department of the Eastman Dental Hospital. Duties include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment planning, including treatment under general anaesthetic and sedation.
  • Supervision of trainees and postgraduate students.
  • Participation in multidisciplinary clinics covering hypodontia, ortho paeds, anomalies and oral medicine.
  • Assisting in remote advice clinics.

The post holder should demonstrate drive and initiative towards patient care, lead and work as part of a team, adhere to mandatory training and maintain a high standard of IT and communication skills.

Person specification Knowledge and Qualifications
  • Full registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC) and a current licence to practice.
  • On the UK GDC Specialist List in Paediatric Dentistry by date of appointment.
  • Membership in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent.
  • Certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CCST in Paediatric Dentistry.
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Paediatric Dentistry (ISFE), or equivalent, before commencing consultant post (or evidence of management and leadership training if no post CCST/ISFE).
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, or equivalent.
Experience
  • All aspects of paediatric dentistry care with emphasis on severe and complex problems.
  • Management of multidisciplinary problems and coordination with other health care providers.
  • Experience with a wide range of orthodontic techniques and materials.
  • Innovative treatments and high quality management of advanced needs.
  • Successful completion of an SAC approved 3 year minimum training programme in Paediatric Dentistry or equivalent.
Audit
  • Participation in audit with demonstrated completed audits.
  • Involvement with clinical governance.
  • Experience supervising audits and leading audit programmes.
  • Evidence of innovative service developments and care pathways.
Management
  • Two year additional training period post CCST in a SAC approved programme, or equivalent, to gain secondary care delivery knowledge.
  • Understanding of NHS delivery.
  • Experience managing and liaising with teams and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of NHS policies and procedures.
  • Experience in assisting or managing healthcare delivery within the NHS.
  • Evidence of contribution to departmental management.
Research
  • Ability to appraise scientific literature critically.
  • Application of evidence based practice to clinical care.
  • Publications in refereed journals.
  • Research relevant to Paediatric Dentistry.
  • MSc or equivalent.
Teaching skill & experience
  • Chairside clinical teaching and training of postgraduates and junior staff.
  • Lectures, presentations and formal teaching to clinical groups.
  • Commitment to training and CPD.
  • Completion of a teaching or training course.

  • Communication: clear written and spoken English, ability to build rapport, listen, persuade and negotiate.
