This is a full-time permanent post. The post holder will be part of the Clinical Neurophysiology Department within the Brain Directorate. As a member of the Clinical Neurophysiology department, you will provide specialist paediatric diagnostic expertise for a broad range of neurophysiology investigations.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Neurophysiology Department aims to determine the best techniques for demonstrating abnormalities of the nervous system in children and uses these to aid diagnosis, guide treatment and inform prognosis. The major areas of activity are:

  • General EEG - covers referrals for conventional scalp recordings, most commonly for the diagnosis and classification of seizures. About 175 EEGs are performed per month; about 25% are recordings in the Intensive Care Units. An acute diagnostic service is also provided in the Rapid Access Neurological Unit (RANU), with either extended EEG recordings or urgent NCS/EMG studies.
  • Prolonged EEG - increasingly conducted in ITU, ward and day case settings to capture events of interest.
  • Evoked potentials - visual, somatosensory and brainstem auditory evoked potential studies are performed in both inpatient and outpatient settings for a variety of indications.
  • Inpatient Telemetry - situated on Koala ward, with at least 4 dedicated beds.
  • Home video telemetry (HVT) - provides diagnostic video EEG for children in and around London, with capacity to undertake two assessments per week.
  • Invasive monitoring - usually 2 SEEG cases per month.
