Consultant in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. The Trust is a leading centre for Infectious Diseases research, including metagenomics, and is a key partner in the Southern Counties Pathology network.
Main duties- Inpatient and outpatient Infectious Diseases activity
- Clinical Microbiology including participating in the Consultant duty Microbiologist weekly rota
- Antimicrobial Stewardship activity
- Participation in the ID Clinical and Radiology MDTs
- Participation in the Microbiology out-of-hours on-call rota (1 in 8)
MBBS or equivalent; full GMC registration; MRCP or equivalent; FRCPath or equivalent; and experience in a tertiary NHS setting. Candidates should have documented experience in managing inpatients with infectious diseases and in providing microbiology advice to clinical teams.
Person Specification- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- MRCP or equivalent
- FRCPath or equivalent
- Extensive and in-depth knowledge of working within the NHS
- Experience of managing inpatients with suspected and confirmed Infectious diseases
- Experience of providing Microbiology advice to Trust based clinical teams and health care staff in the community
- Experience of Microbiology results interpretation and authorisation and close working with Microbiology Laboratory staff
- Participation in audit and clinical governance activity
- Within 6 months or CCT in Infectious Diseases & Medical Microbiology (dual CCT accreditation)
- MD or PhD
- Prizes/Distinctions
- Significant publications in peer reviewed journals
- Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H)
- Evidence of clinical experience in a tertiary centre
- Evidence of experience developing a new service
- Laboratory management experience
- Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
- Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
- Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
- Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines

Salary depends on experience and is in the range £109,725 - £145,478 per annum.
