The Emergency Department (ED) was purpose built in 2014 and offers state of-the-art facilities. This was part of a new development at YGC called the Emergency Quadrant (EQ) which brings all Emergency and Acute Services together. The EQ houses the ED, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), a 24 bed Acute Medical Unit, Surgical Assessment Unit, Radiology services, and a co-located Primary Care facility.
The ED sees a full case mix of undifferentiated emergencies encompassing all specialties including Major Trauma, Stroke, Cardiac, Vascular, ENT, Ophthalmology, Max Fax and Paediatrics.
The Department has also been undergoing a process of implementation of modern models of Emergency Care including streaming, ambulatory majors, and rapid assessment. The ED is also keen to explore a 'Physician Response Vehicle" or PRV model providing a mixed EM and ambulance service response to selected cases in which alternative pathways avoiding hospital admission may be to the patients benefit.
There are opportunities available to contribute via competitive appointment to the Welsh Air Ambulance Emergency and Retrieval Service (EMRTS).
Main duties of the job- Support the Nurse in Charge (NIC) to manage Emergency Department (ED) risk escalating ED capacity and safety concerns.
- Being a point of clinical contact in ED for Senior Clinicians and Management.
- Allocating staff to the ED areas and responding to demand by moving staff as needed, following up on any sickness / no-shows / late starts and ask for extra cover.
- Using Symphony to proactively run the ED.
- Focusing on patient safety risks, reviewing unwell patients, and seeing patients as needed.
- Supporting the streaming of patients to Minor Injury Units (MIUs), Specialities or Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) where appropriate.
- Anticipating and intervening with unexpected issues, e.g., health and safety risks.
- Prescribing analgesia, signing off ECGs and blood gases as needed.
- Undertake the role of Trauma Team Leader for Major Trauma.
- Support the streaming service/ Rapid assessment and treatment service.
- Assisting with triage and review of ambulance patients.
- Assisting with selecting cases that can be streamed to SDEC.

Person Specification Training and Qualifications- Full GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
- FRCEM
- Valid ATLS, ALS, APLS or equivalent provider status
- Subspecialty training in Paediatrics or Prehospital EM
- Instructor Status in ALS, ATLS, APLS or equivalent
- RCEM Level 1 accreditation in EM Ultrasound
- Evidence of shop floor supervision training e.g., RCEM ELSEs
- Training in leadership and human factors
- Able to provide ED shop floor leadership and supervision
- Able to provide senior EM clinical skills and leadership as described by the RCEM Curriculum
- Evidence of professional interests relevant to EM practice
- Experience, commitment, and enthusiasm for teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate level
- Willingness to teach all clinical staff including ACPs, paramedics, nurses, PAs, and ENPs.
- Postgraduate training in clinical education
- Experience of EM clinical governance activity
- Understanding of patient safety and risk management
- Experience of audit and quality improvement
- Ability to undertake EM relevant project work and liaise with specialties.
- Evidence of a service improvement activity
- Evidence of strategic work e.g., contribution to planning and policy development
- Ability to deliver change
- CPD portfolio relevant to UK EM practice
- Ability to undertake critical appraisal and support any departmental research activity
- Evidence of role in delivering CPD
- Evidence of research activity and EM relevant publications
- A shared ethos values of the Health Board
- Flexibility, personal integrity, and willingness to work cohesively in the ED team.

- High standards of verbal and written English
- Able to attend hospital within 30 mins for on-call duties
