Consultant in Emergency Medicine University Hospital Waterford for 37 hours per week

This is an appointment to the HSE Dublin & South East Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Waterford for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

Main Duties of the Job

The Consultant in Emergency Medicine will provide clinical leadership within a Consultant-led, Consultant-delivered Emergency Department, supporting the delivery of safe, timely and compassionate care for patients presenting with urgent and emergency healthcare needs.

The postholder will contribute to the ongoing transformation of emergency care services, promoting innovation, quality improvement, patient flow and integrated models of care in line with Sláintecare principles and national Emergency Medicine objectives. The successful candidate will work collaboratively across specialties, professions and healthcare settings to ensure optimal patient outcomes and an excellent patient experience.

The Consultant will participate in the Department's Consultant roster and will play a key role in clinical governance, service development, education, training, research and the delivery of organisational objectives within University Hospital Waterford.

The Consultant in Emergency Medicine will provide senior clinical leadership within a consultant-led, consultant-delivered Emergency Department and will contribute to the ongoing development of emergency care services at University Hospital Waterford.

Clinical Responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Provide expert assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management of patients presenting with emergency and urgent care needs.
  • Deliver timely senior clinical decision-making to support safe, effective and patient-centred care.

Leadership and Service Development

The post holder will:

  • Provide clinical leadership in the continued development of emergency care services at University Hospital Waterford.
  • Contribute to service planning and strategic development within the Emergency Department and wider hospital group.

Education, Training and Research

The post holder will:

  • Participate in the education, supervision and professional development of Specialist Registrars, Non-Consultant Hospital Doctors (NCHDs) and medical students.
  • Support multidisciplinary education and training initiatives within the Emergency Department and across the hospital.

University Hospital Waterford (UHW) is committed to developing innovative and integrated models of care that ensure patients receive timely, safe and effective treatment in the most appropriate setting.

The Emergency Department (ED) at UHW provides a comprehensive 24/7 service for c.80,000 adult and paediatric patients presenting with undifferentiated emergency and urgent care needs. Patients access the service via self-presentation, General Practitioner referral and emergency ambulance services. The department comprises a three-bay Resuscitation Area, 14 assessment and treatment cubicles, a 10-bay Ambulatory Care Unit, dedicated paediatric facilities, a five-bay Injury Unit and appropriate isolation facilities.

The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.

The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026:

The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.

The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
