This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to University Hospital Kerry for 33 hours per week and Cork University Hospital for 4 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

Main Duties of the Job

The successful applicant will work 70% of their time providing direct clinical care and the remainder of their 37 hour week performing non-clinical governance activity. In addition the successful applicant will be on a rolling 1:7 on call rota at UHK assuring a 7 day cover per week.

UHK consultants in Emergency Medicine recognize the need to develop higher standards of practices in line with HIQA recommendations to deliver care that is patient centric, aligned to Slainte Care, and reduce the congestion in the Emergency Department and the associated risk therein. By progressing the department to meet the professional standards as set out by the Emergency Medicine Program and RCPI as a training site, the standard of care delivered over a 24 hour period will be enhanced.

Clinical

To participate in the development of, and undertake, all duties and functions pertinent to the Consultant's area of competence, as set out within the Clinical Directorate Service Plan and in line with policies as specified by the Employer. To be responsible for the care and treatment and review of all patients under his/her charge and to maintain clinical autonomy relating to the management and care of individual patients in line with the agreed Work Schedule.

Teaching and Research

To participate in teaching, including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and conference commitments of the department and of the Hospital for medical, nursing and other staff. Maintain a programme of continuing medical education applicable to the responsibilities of the post in accordance with the requirements of the Medical Practitioners Act, 2007.

The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.

The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
