Job overviewWe are looking to appoint a Community Consultant Paediatrician.
This is an opportunity to join the enthusiastic and friendly paediatric department in Wigan. There are close links between the community and acute paediatric services with some colleagues doing hybrid roles across both services. There are no acute paediatric or on-call commitments with these posts.
Main duties of the jobWWL Foundation Trust caters for a population of 310,000 and offers integrated children's services combining hospital and community care within the Child Health Directorate.
The locality community paediatric workload will involve the assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental difficulties, including ADHD, ASD and other learning difficulties, and associated comorbidities. You will work closely with community services, North West Boroughs NHS Healthcare Foundation Trust, education and social care. Safeguarding calls may be undertaken if you wish to include them in your role.
You will see patients in a variety of outpatient settings, including the Thomas Linacre, Leigh Infirmary, Platt Bridge, Ashton community sites, Claire House and special schools such as Hope School, Rowan Tree Primary School and Willow Grove Primary School. Visiting clinics in cardiology, rheumatology, neurology, nephrology and urology are run by specialists from tertiary children's hospitals in the region.
Paediatric surgical facilities and a self contained Paediatric Emergency Care Centre are located at the RAEI site, which also houses the A&E Department for the Wigan and Leigh district. All acute children's admissions are seen here and there is an assessment area with 8 cubicles.
Qualifications- MB ChB or equivalent
- MRCPCH or equivalent
- CCT in Paediatrics (or within 6 months of obtaining it by interview time)
- Full GMC Registration
- Evidence of Level 3 competencies in Community Child Health
- Further degree (MD/PhD)
- CCT in Community Child Health / Neurodisability
- Teaching skills and experience
- Ability to supervise the clinical work of doctors in training and other staff
- Oral and written communication skills in English
- Ability to organise and prioritise personal workload and that of others
- Ability to build effective relationships and work collaboratively with staff at all levels of the organisation
- Ability to relate to patients and carers from a wide range of backgrounds and to empathise with their needs and concerns
- Membership of appropriate professional societies (eg. RCPCH/BACD/BACCH)
- Experience of audit
- Participation in research
- Experience of clinical research, presentations and publications of original studies, review articles, etc., relevant to the speciality
- Ability to lead a clinical research project
- Able to travel between sites to meet the requirements of the post
- Satisfactory medical clearance from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Trusts Occupational Health Physician
- Member of Medical Defence Organisation
- Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to the role, i.e. with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation
- Driving licence and own car
- At least 2 years of general professional training in Paediatrics
- At least 2 years of Higher Specialist Training in Community Paediatrics, with Level 3 competencies and experience in safeguarding
- Specialist experience in one or more particular areas of Community Child Health practice to take a lead in that area
