Job Description
Overview

The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust is a large teaching trust providing a wide range of clinical services and medical education. We are looking to appoint a Consultant in Clinical Oncology with a special interest in the medical management of Urological malignancies at Churchill Hospital, Oxford and Great Western Hospitals, Swindon. The successful candidate will work with existing Medical and Clinical Oncology colleagues, clinical nurse specialists, nurse prescribers, pharmacists and other members of the multidisciplinary teams across these tumour sites.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a cancer service to patients with Urological malignancies throughout the trust and referral region.
  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the management of oncology.
  • Work with colleagues at Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Share responsibility for day-to-day management of oncology with colleagues.
  • Participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit.
  • Participate actively in continuing medical education.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, allied health professionals and medical students.
Working for our organisation

The Oxford urology service provides a supra-regional, national service for renal cancers, including leading surgery and SABR, and regional cancer services for bladder, germ cell and prostate cancers. The radiotherapy hub is at the Churchill Hospital with satellite centres in Swindon and Milton Keynes. We have an active SABR programme and participate in national and international trials, collaborating with medical oncology and other services to provide comprehensive systemic therapy.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

The post-holder will mainly be based at Churchill Hospital, Oxford and Great Western Hospitals, Swindon. It is a requirement to be willing to work in any of the Trust's locations, including Horton Hospital (Banbury), Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Wycombe Hospital (Buckinghamshire), Great Western Hospital (Swindon) and Milton Keynes Hospital. Typical clinic load includes 2 new and 8 follow-up patients per 4-hour clinic; for a 42-week year, approximately 250-300 new patients may be seen.

Teaching/Research

The Trust is a teaching hospital trust; the post-holder will participate in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. Teaching, training and research are expected as integral parts of the job plan. An Educational Supervisor role within the department is included. Applications from those who wish to combine NHS work with clinical research are welcome.

Clinical Governance

Participation in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement and external accreditation, is required.

Personal and Professional Development

Maintaining up-to-date practice and undertaking appropriate CME are required. Educational and mentorship opportunities are available for new consultants.

Management

The post-holder will follow Trust management policies and procedures and contribute to departmental administration under the lead clinician. A Deputy Leadership role may be assigned to gain experience in governance and management. A mentor will be provided in addition to line management.

Person specification Qualifications / Training
  • MB ChB or equivalent. FRCR or equivalent.
  • CCT or CESR in Clinical Oncology; OR within six months of achieving CCT at time of interview
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Higher Medical / Research degree
Experience
  • General training in Clinical Oncology to specialist level or equivalent
  • Experience in all aspects of clinical oncology and tumour sites
  • Ability to make decisions at consultant level
  • Research/Clinical trials experience, publications or presentations
Skills and Knowledge
  • Strong leadership, organisational, communication and professional skills to undertake the role effectively
  • Good interpersonal skills and English language proficiency
  • Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
  • Experience in clinical audit and risk management
  • ICH GCP training within last 12 months; involvement in clinical trials
  • Management training and NHS knowledge
  • Publication of research
