Overview

Consultant post within the clinical haematology department focusing on haematostasis and thrombosis. The role involves delivering high quality care for venous thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, haemophilia, bleeding disorders and interventional therapies for DVT.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Provide and develop services for thrombosis and haemostasis including anticoagulation management.
  2. Lead the expansion of DVT and outpatient PE services and develop the Haemophilia and Bleeding Disorder Service.
  3. Specialise in interventional therapies for acute proximal DVT and manage VTE outcomes (post thrombotic syndrome, pulmonary hypertension).
  4. Deliver clinical care in the chosen subspecialty within haemostasis and thrombosis (including ITP).
  5. Provide 24/7 coverage on the unit rota, covering leave and sickness as required.
  6. Supervise junior doctors and resident doctors, including teaching, assessment and CPD duties.
  7. Contribute to research, audit, morbidity & mortality and clinical governance programmes.
  8. Assist in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the care group's business plan.
  9. Exercise professional leadership, foster staff development and maintain productivity.
  10. Adhere to all trust infection prevention and control policies.
  11. Prepare and deliver clinically evidence based protective interventions ensuring patient safety.
Person Specification Qualifications & Higher Education
  • Full MRCP and FRCPath.
  • Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD).
  • Full registration with GMC; name on the GMC Specialist Register at appointment.
  • Candidates within 6 months of CCT or in final portfolio stage only.
Training and Experience
  • Wide experience in haematology culminating in award of CCT or equivalent.
  • Specialist training and experience in haemostasis and/or thrombosis.
Administration
  • Experience organising haematology within a busy teaching hospital.
  • General computer skills and familiarity with NHS structure.
Management and Leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Management course or qualification.
Audit and Quality Improvement
  • Understanding of medical audit principles and completed audit projects.
  • Audit publications.
Research and Publications
  • Experience of clinical and translational research.
  • Publications in haemostasis and/or thrombosis.
Teaching
  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and exam preparation.
  • Teaching skills course or qualification.
Job Specific Criteria
  • Clinical trials experience.
