This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Hospital for 37 hours per week. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the JobThe purpose of this post is to strengthen and develop the general paediatric service at Cork University Hospital, with a particular focus on improving health outcomes for children from migrant, refugee, and underserved populations. The post holder will contribute to consultant delivered care across inpatient, Paediatric Assessment Unit, High Dependency Unit, and outpatient settings, participating in the Consultant of the Week model.
A key remit of this post is to lead the development of an Inclusion Health service for general paediatrics across the HSE South West Region. The post holder will act as the departmental lead for paediatric inclusion health, developing and implementing care pathways for children from migrant and underserved populations, integrating these services with primary care, community paediatrics, and relevant subspecialty services, and liaising with inclusion health teams nationally.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities- Deliver consultant led care to general paediatric patients across inpatient, ambulatory, Paediatric Assessment Unit, and outpatient settings.
- Participate in the Consultant of the Week model, providing daily senior review of inpatients and ensuring continuity of care.
- Manage patients admitted to the inpatient wards, PAU, and High Dependency Unit when on service.
- Participate in the general paediatric on call rota (approximately 1:18) including weekends and bank holidays.
- Conduct three to four outpatient clinics per week, including dedicated inclusion health clinics.
- Manage outpatient waiting lists in line with national KPIs.
- Participate in daily ward rounds and morning handover.
- Liaise with national level services and transport services regarding transfer of critically unwell children to Children's Health Ireland.
- Maintain CME in line with National/Faculty of Paediatrics and Medical Council standards.
- Lead the development and implementation of a structured Inclusion Health service for general paediatrics across the HSE South West Region.
- Develop and implement care pathways for children from migrant, refugee, and underserved populations.
- Integrate paediatric inclusion health services with primary care, community paediatrics, and subspecialty services.
- Participate in regional and national Inclusion Health meetings and networks.
- Contribute to the development of outreach clinics at St Mary's Primary Care Campus, Gurranabraher, and other community settings.
- Contribute to management roles within the Paediatric Directorate on a rotational basis.
Care is delivered in a variety of settings. New approaches and models of care to follow the care demands of the Health Service are being advanced within the context of overall healthcare reform, to include Sláintecare. Cork University Hospital (CUH) is Ireland's largest Paediatric regional unit, currently tri located with maternity and adult services. Following the amalgamation of the Mercy University Hospital Paediatrics Department with CUH, all paediatric services for Cork are now located on a single site. CUH is the designated Model 4 paediatric centre for the HSE South West Region, providing comprehensive general paediatric and paediatric emergency services as well as tertiary level subspecialty care including endocrinology, respiratory medicine, neurology, neurodisability, cardiology, and allergy.
Salary and BenefitsThe annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026 will be applied. Incremental credit is awarded in respect of previous experience at Consultant level. The standard working week applying to the post is 37 hours per week. The annual leave associated with the post is 30 working days per annum.
