Applications are invited for the position of Consultant in Gastroenterology at South Tyneside & Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
There is one full time post available, primarily based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, with potential duties at the other site.
We are looking for an outstanding, highly motivated individual to join our dynamic team of fourteen consultants and multi subspecialist nurses, providing and facilitating a high quality gastroenterology service for our patients.
The post holder will work within a team of 10 consultants and have opportunities to work part time, have flexible working or increased patient allocations. All subspecialty interests are encouraged, and development to mutually benefit the trust and patients will be supported. The trust is an immersion endoscopy training site for the North East, offering opportunities in the North East Endoscopy Training Academy.
The Gastroenterology department sits within the Directorate of General Internal Medicine across two sites, overseeing inpatients in dedicated wards at each site. A full range of outpatient services is provided, supported by an excellent team of resident doctors, nurses and administrative staff.
ResponsibilitiesAs a medical consultant, you will have continuous responsibility for the care of inpatients and outpatients. You will supervise local ward and outpatient staff, cover on call duties, holidays, study leave and short term sickness for colleagues, and may act as an educational and clinical supervisor or appraiser for junior doctors. You will also participate actively in departmental clinical governance meetings and share responsibility for developing the gastroenterology service, including seven day services at the South Tyneside site.
The post holder must possess Membership/Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, be on the GMC Specialist Register for both General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, and hold a valid license to practise at the time of employment. The team is expected to contribute to coordinated work across both sites, improve efficiency and patient pathways, and pursue research and national study opportunities.
Experience- Relevant experience in any declared subspecialist interest pertinent to the post
- Evidence of clinical audit and understanding of clinical governance
- Competence in managing routine and emergency general medical patients
- Experience in medical simulation and patient safety projects
- Success in obtaining research funding
- Evidence of research or innovative service developments
- Evidence of leadership
- Wide experience in gastroenterology and general medicine
- Demonstrated active involvement in medical simulation
- High level of understanding of human factors influencing patient safety
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
- Teaching and training skills for junior doctors
- Management training
- Knowledge of current national agendas affecting the NHS and their implications
- Residence within 10 miles of the main base (reasonable requests may be considered)
- Flexibility to respond to changing service needs
- Clear understanding of boundaries regarding sessional work outside the hospital
- Commitment to good teamwork and relationships
- Commitment to training and continuing medical education (CME)
- Strong leadership skills
- Enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure
- Supportive and tolerant attitude
- Caring attitude towards patients
- MB ChB or equivalent
- MRCP or equivalent
- Full registration and license to practise with GMC
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of expected date of CCT in Gastroenterology and general medicine
- Postgraduate thesis
- HRUK exam or equivalent
