Job Description
Consultant Community Paediatrician The closing date is 31 October 2025

You will already be:
  • Broadly experienced in all aspect of Community Paediatrics.
  • Competent in assessing children for suspected abuse and neglect.
  • Able to diagnose and manage a range of neuro developmental problems (including ASD & ADHD) and neurodisability.
  • Experienced in aspects of child mental health related to child development.

Main duties of the job This is a clinical role, undertaking assessment, formulation and intervention required to deliver the commissioned community paediatric service.

The post holders will be working as part of the Specialist Children's Service multi disciplinary team and is expected to contribute to the development of best practice through participation in clinical governance activity. There are no out of hours on call requirement for this job.

Job responsibilities The Community Paediatric commissioned service includes:
  • Assessment and management of children and young people with developmental impairments, neuro disability and neurodivergence, including multi disciplinary assessments (MDA).
  • Provision of medical assessments and reports for Education, Health and Care Plans.
  • Child protection medical assessments for physical abuse & neglect.
  • Adoption medicals and Initial Health Assessments (IHAs) for Children in Care.
Personal and Professional development The post holders will be required to be compliant with the GMC relicensing and revalidation process and participate in annual appraisal. Time is allocated within the job plan to support professional activities including CPD. Training and support is available to take on the role as a Medical Appraiser within the Trust.

The post holder must comply with mandatory training provided by the Trust as assessed suitable for the post.

Research & Training We run weekly internal CPD activities, and the department has been involved in several regional and national research projects. There are also educational meetings held jointly with paediatric colleagues at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital. The post holders will be encouraged and supported to undertake audit and research activities.

We offer training in Community Paediatrics to a range of trainees from Foundation Year 2 to Grid trainees in Community Paediatrics who rotate every six months. There is opportunity to take on the role of Clinical and/or Educational Supervisor.

Compliance with Corporate management The post holders will be required to work within CCS NHS Trusts management policies and procedures, including those related to safeguarding children. At times clinical work may vary according to the needs of the department. Should this require a new role requiring additional skills, appropriate training and support will be provided. Administrative and clinical duties will be allocated under the direction of the Clinical Lead and will be reflected in the job plan.

The post holders must take reasonable care of their own health and safety. CCS NHS Trust policy must be adhered to at all times.

Clinical and Practice Governance The post holders will be required to work within the clinical governance framework for the CCS NHS Trust and the department, and will be required to participate in service improvement, quality assurance, and clinical effectiveness and risk management activities as required.

Facilities Office accommodation and secretarial support will be provided. There will be access to IT terminal with access to departmental IT system, intranet and internet.

Sustainability It is the responsibility of all staff to minimize the Trusts environmental impact wherever possible. Where the role includes the ordering and use of supplies or equipment the post holder will consider the environmental impact of purchases.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The post is covered by the national Terms and Conditions Consultants (England) 2003, as amended from time to time.

As the CCS NHS Trust develops it will review these terms and may vary the national agreements to respond to local conditions and reflect CCS NHS Trust requirements.

Residence The new consultant will be required to maintain his/her private residence in contact with the public telephone service, and to reside within a reasonable distance by road from the main base.

Relocation The granting of relocation expenses is not automatic, and entitlement should be checked with the Human Resource Team. A copy of the Relocation Expenses Policy is available on request.

Occupational Health Applicants invited for interview will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire for submission to the CCS NHS Trust Occupational Health Service.

Registration The successful candidate must hold full registration and license with the GMC.
