This is a consultant-level post focusing on pain management psychology pathways, requiring extensive clinical experience in pain management and broader physical health and rehabilitation psychology.

You will provide operational leadership for inpatient and outpatient pain management psychology pathways, alongside direct clinical input, and offer consultation and MDT support across the wider pain service.

The post holder will be a core member of the consultant leadership team in CHPS, supporting the Head of Service and colleagues in strategic service development, providing clinical leadership and line management within the service.

We seek an enthusiastic, confident, and flexible practitioner experienced in working with patients facing complex psychological and physical health challenges.

Main duties of the job

Your responsibilities include developing specialised clinical health psychology pathways for patients with persistent pain, based on NICE guidelines and standards in pain management. You will also provide teaching, training, supervision, and support for MDT colleagues to promote psychologically informed care.

Collaboration is essential. You will work closely with psychology colleagues, MDT members, and key stakeholders, demonstrating leadership and experience at a similar or higher level.

You will undertake extended roles within the Clinical Health Psychology Services and work flexibly across services as directed by the Head of Service.

You will ensure high-quality patient care aligned with the Trust's strategic objectives, providing managerial support and professional leadership to psychology team members across physical health specialties.

Job responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver specialist pathways and care for patients with persistent and acute-on-chronic pain, including inpatient and outpatient care.
  • Lead pain psychology pathways, overseeing assessment, formulation, and intervention across settings.
  • Provide multidisciplinary care through joint appointments and assessment clinics.
  • Train and support MDT colleagues in psychologically informed care.
  • Supervise clinical practice within teams.
  • Conduct research, audits, and service evaluations, including reporting on clinical activity and effectiveness.
  • Promote understanding of patient needs, symptoms, and care approaches within MDTs.
  • Contribute to pathway development and stakeholder engagement.
  • Collaborate with psychologist colleagues, MDT members, and stakeholders.
  • Undertake extended roles within CHPs and work flexibly as directed.
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality patient care and support team members.

Person Specification Qualifications and Education
  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology accredited by HCPC or equivalent.
  • HCPC registration as a practitioner psychologist.
  • Post-qualification training in additional specialised areas.
  • Commitment to CPD, evidenced by ongoing training.
  • Qualification in supervision.
  • Peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, or similar contributions.
  • Post-doctoral qualifications in neuropsychological assessment or specific therapies (e.g., EMDR, ACT).
  • Leadership training and experience.
Knowledge and Experience
  • Significant experience at a similar level, with extended roles.
  • Specialised knowledge of psychological models and therapies in health psychology.
  • Doctoral-level understanding of psychology theory, assessment, and interventions.
  • Experience with multiple psychological therapies.
  • Post-qualification CPD and training in supervision.
  • Research design and methodology expertise.
  • Leadership and management skills, understanding of legislation.
  • Experience working with complex clinical presentations in various settings.
  • Ability to exercise full clinical responsibility within multidisciplinary care plans.
  • Experience in teaching, training, supervision, and service development.
  • Experience in NHS management and inter-agency collaboration.
  • Knowledge of NHS structures and service user involvement.
  • Leadership experience in managing psychologists and therapy teams.
  • Research experience of high standard.
  • Ability to work with commissioners and senior management.
  • Additional training in leadership and management.
