Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Cardiothoracic Intensive Care at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. This post has arisen due to expansion of services. The position would be suitable for both newly qualified and existing consultants in search of a new opportunity.
The Trust provides tertiary cardiothoracic facilities for the 1.6 million people of Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Lancashire Cardiac Centre was commissioned in July 2006 and is one of our four regional centres for Cardiothoracic surgery. It houses catheter labs, four operating theatres and 20 critical care beds, together with associated ward beds and dedicated educational and research facilities. As a department we provide anaesthetic cover for minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, major aortic work, routine cardiac and thoracic procedures as well as TAVI, device extraction/implants and electrophysiology work. Cardiothoracic intensive care is an Adult Intensive Care unit managed by Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists and comprises 20 beds, 12 of which are Level 3 and the remainder Level 2. The unit functions as one unit with no physical separation as HDU and ITU. Approximately 1,500 patients per year are admitted to the intensive care unit each year, 75% after cardiac surgery and the remaining following thoracic surgery or cardiology procedures.
