Job overview We have one post available for a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Neurosurgery Anaesthesia.
We are looking for a dynamic consultant who is seeking to work in a complex Tertiary Trauma Centre; the work is challenging but rewarding and the department is a vibrant and supportive one.
The Anaesthetic Directorate is ACSA accredited by the Royal College of Anaesthesia and led by a team supporting the perioperative model recommended by the Royal College of Anaesthetists and we provide many tertiary services including, Neurosurgery, Interventional Radiology, Vascular, Upper GI, major Oncology Surgery, Maxillo Facial, Plastics and Burns.
The directorate also houses a 34 bedded Critical Care Unit for all of the above specialties. Critical Care have an extensive national research portfolio.
Royal Preston Hospital delivers the Major Trauma Service for all of Lancashire and South Cumbria.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals provides Elective and Emergency Secondary and Tertiary Adult Services to a large population of approximately 1.5 million throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria.
This will be across both Preston and Chorley sites depending on Directorate service requirements, but you will be based at Royal Preston Hospital.
Main duties of the job Professional
As the regional Hospital, we serve a local population of around 390,000 and provide a number of specialised services to around 1.5 million people across Lancashire and South Cumbria. Most of our clinical services are provided on our two hospital sites - Chorley and South Ribble Hospital and Royal Preston Hospital. We also have a specialist mobility and rehabilitation service in Preston, the Broadoaks child development centre in Leyland and we provide dialysis units in various locations in Lancashire.

Main duties of the job Professional
- To assume a continuous commitment for the care of patients, even if employed less than full-time and ensure, in consultation with colleagues, that adequate arrangements are made for leave and off duty periods.
- To promote high professional standards of clinical care for patients, both through direct patient care, supporting professional activities and by the maintenance of continuing professional development.
- To provide an anaesthetic service as a member of the Department of Anaesthesia. This will be across both Preston and Chorley sites depending on Directorate service requirements.
- To undertake pre-operative assessment of patients as appropriate, together with post-operative management and follow-up of patients in appropriate cases.
- To undertake weekly theatre sessions as allocated of which a proportion will be delivered flexibly over each week, to maintain the high level of anaesthetic service delivery required by the Trust. These may include evening sessions, or, rarely, a weekend session (by mutual agreement).
- To participate in an on call rota providing consultant cover for out of hours emergencies.
- To undertake administrative duties involved with the care of his/her patients.
- To promote high professional standards of clinical care of patients and the health and safety of the theatre environment.
- To maintain continuing education and professional development at least to the requirements of the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

- Intensive, high dependency and coronary care units

- Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCA or equivalent
- CCT or equivalent (or within six months at the time of interview) OR entered on the GMC specialist register
- Meets requirements of a Clinical Supervisor as defined by the GMC
- Advanced Neuroanaesthesia as Specialist Interest Area
- Higher Medical Degree (MD or MSc) (gen)
- Evidence of working within MDTs (gen)
- Certificate of Postgraduate Education or equivalent (gen)
- Wide experience in undertaking anaesthesia in the UK
- Some experience of departmental management
- Evidence of Clinical Leadership
- Evidence of commitment to audit
- Evidence of service development
- Management course/certification
- Demonstration of improving departmental clinical practice
- Evidence of interest in personal development (research, publications)
- Experience of Peer reviewed publications
- Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice
- Proven effective communication skills and how they worked.
- Evidence of good organisation skills (with examples).
- Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
- Resident within 30 minutes travel time to Chorley/Preston.
