The consultants provide comprehensive anaesthetic services primarily at Moorfields Eye Hospital on City Road and support satellite sites across London. Direct care sessions include operating lists and pre-assessment clinics.
Main duties of the jobConsultants are responsible for patient care and the proper functioning of the service, including delegation and training of junior staff. They are expected to maintain an efficient service, optimize theatre time, and work flexibly to ensure smooth operations.
All consultant staff and honorary consultants are expected to contribute to the Medical Advisory Committee and other hospital committees as required. Participation in audit meetings, clinical governance, and continuous professional development is also expected.
The operating theatres are generally closed between 21:00 - 08:30 on weekdays and 18:00 - 08:30 on weekends.

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe position is based at Moorfields Eye Hospital, including the City Road site and satellite units around London.
The full-time job plan includes 10 PAs: 7 regular DCC sessions and 3 SPA sessions, with potential adjustments after negotiation.
The post requires flexibility to cover for colleagues and support satellite units. The case mix includes pediatric to elderly patients, many of whom undergo day surgeries, often under local anesthesia. The anaesthetic service is crucial for perioperative care due to limited other hospital services.
Additional departmental activities include management, teaching, and audit participation.
The JD is pending approval from the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Person specification Education & Qualifications- FRCA or equivalent
- Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
- CCT in Anaesthesia or equivalent, or within 6 months of CCT
- Higher Degree (MD or PhD)
- Higher training in paediatric anaesthesia as per RCoA
- APLS or EPLS provider
- Trained in clinical supervision (GMC)
- Level 3 child protection training
- Advanced paediatric anaesthesia training
- Educational supervision training (GMC)
- Higher or advanced training in day care anaesthesia
- Leadership skills
- Commitment to service improvement
- Teaching and research credentials
You must hold appropriate UK professional registration.
