Job Description

Job Title: Construction Tutor

Location: HMP (Rugby, Warwickshire)

Salary: From 30,000 per annum

Contract: Permanent, Full-Time

The Opportunity

Are you an experienced construction professional or trade specialist looking to step off the site and use your hands-on expertise to build brighter futures? Do you want to play a key role in reducing reoffending by inspiring adult learners-many with little or no prior formal education-to gain practical trade skills, workplace confidence, and industry qualifications?

We are recruiting for a passionate Vocational Construction Tutor to join the education team on-site at HMP Onley. Working with small groups of prison-based learners, you will deliver high-quality, practical construction training, helping them build technical competence, positive workplace habits, and job-readiness for post-release employment in the building sector.

What You Will Be Doing
  • Practical Vocational Instruction: Plan and deliver engaging, high-quality construction sessions, adapting lesson plans to meet diverse learner needs and abilities.
  • Confidence & Skill Building: Inspire and mentor learners with limited educational backgrounds, helping them develop practical trade skills, self-esteem, and positive workplace behaviours.
  • Individual Training Plans: Establish tailored learning goals for every student, offering consistent advice, guidance, and constructive feedback throughout their training.
  • Safety & Tool Control: Maintain strict health & safety standards, workshop discipline, and tool inventory control in compliance with prison security protocols.
  • Rehabilitation Focus: Link practical training directly to real-world construction careers, preparing learners for successful entry into the trade upon release.
What We Are Looking For
  • Trade Qualifications: Essential Level 2 or Level 3 vocational qualification in a relevant construction discipline (e.g., Bricklaying, Multi-Skills, Carpentry, or General Building).
  • Core Skills: GCSE or Level 2 Functional Skills in both Maths and English.
  • Vocational Expertise: Substantial hands-on industry experience as an expert within the construction sector.
  • Teaching Qualifications: A teaching or assessing qualification and prior delivery experience are desirable. No teaching qualification? No problem! Candidates with strong industry experience who are willing to work towards a teaching qualification on the job are fully encouraged to apply.
  • Key Attributes: Excellent communication, strong group engagement skills, resilience, and a true passion for mentoring learners from diverse backgrounds.

We are committed to safeguarding children and vulnerable adults. All appointments are subject to satisfactory vetting, including a right to work check and, where relevant, an enhanced DBS, PVG (Scotland), or EWC (Wales) check, in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education.

We are an equal opportunities employer.
