Role OverviewA leading specialist industrial services contractor is seeking an experienced Commercial Manager to take a senior commercial position within an established and substantial division.
The business delivers complex, labour-intensive specialist contracting services across major industrial, pharmaceutical, energy, infrastructure and process environments.
Reporting directly to the Operations Director, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the commercial performance of a portfolio of major contracts, working closely with operational management, clients and senior leadership.
This is a senior and influential position suited to either an established Commercial Manager or a particularly strong Senior Quantity Surveyor who is already comfortable taking significant ownership of contracts, commercial strategy, client negotiations and financial performance.
Key Responsibilities- Take responsibility for the commercial management and financial performance of major contracts.
- Work closely with the Operations Director to drive profitability and commercial performance across the division.
- Provide commercial advice and support to operational teams and senior management.
- Ensure appropriate commercial controls and governance are maintained across all projects.
- Identify commercial risks and opportunities and ensure these are actively managed.
- Oversee contractual administration across a portfolio of live projects and long-term client contracts.
- Manage valuations, variations, change control, claims and final accounts.
- Ensure contractual notices and correspondence are issued correctly and within required timeframes.
- Lead negotiations with clients and subcontractors where required.
- Protect the commercial position of the business throughout the contract lifecycle.
- Manage project budgets, forecasts and cost-to-complete reporting.
- Produce accurate monthly commercial reports for senior management.
- Monitor revenue, margin, cashflow and overall contract profitability.
- Analyse actual performance against budget and forecast.
- Identify areas of commercial underperformance and work with Operations to implement corrective measures.
- Work closely with operational management to understand labour requirements, productivity and project performance.
- Provide commercial input into resource planning and contract delivery strategies.
- Review labour productivity and cost performance across major contracts.
- Support operational teams in making commercially informed decisions.
- Provide commercial input into major tenders, renewals and contract negotiations.
- Review pricing strategies, contract terms and commercial risks.
- Support the development of rates and commercial models for new opportunities.
- Participate in client negotiations and tender adjudications.
- Develop strong commercial relationships with key clients.
- Attend senior commercial and contract review meetings.
- Manage potentially difficult commercial discussions professionally and constructively.
- Support the Operations Director in maintaining long-term strategic client relationships.
- Manage, mentor and develop Quantity Surveyors and other commercial personnel.
- Establish consistent commercial procedures and reporting standards.
- Support the continued development and strengthening of the commercial function.
- Significant experience within Quantity Surveying / Commercial Management.
- Current Senior QS, Managing QS, Commercial Manager or equivalent.
- Experience managing major contracts and complex commercial arrangements.
- Background within one or more of the following would be particularly relevant:
- Scaffolding / Access Solutions
- Specialist Contracting
- Mechanical / Electrical Contracting
- Pharmaceutical
- Construction / Infrastructure
- Degree qualified in Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics or related discipline preferred.
- Chartered status advantageous but not essential.
