This role requires a combined skillset of People Management and Underwriting expertise, supporting and working closely with the Commercial Lines Management team to achieve operational and quality targets. Contribute to the success of our Commercial SME business by participating in business plan objectives and committing to individual team objectives

Manage a Commercial SME portfolio to achieve profitability and growth through risk-selection, pricing and relationship development. You will have experience in leading teams and have good technical knowledge and operational management skills.

Provide effective leadership by continuously keeping your team informed on changes/results and share accountability for the overall performance, productivity and engagement with team membersDetermine goals and objectives for direct reports; assign responsibilities; provide guidance and feedback regarding performance, facilitate continuous learning, career development and succession planning

The role requires a focus on agreed target delivery, positive employee engagement, building technical capability, underwriting discipline, guiding/coaching and driving operational improvement opportunities and change management.

Develop and nurture successful working relationships with our broker partners through strong communication, visibility and participation in achieving results

You will be required to assist and support the Trading team to achieve business targets and deliver the defined customer propositions.

You will have strong analytical, relationship management and communication skills.

Recommend and develop products to aid in growth targets. Ad hoc project work as required.

Improve workflows to aid in department efficiencies

Key Responsibilities
  • Leading and developing Underwriters & Operational Leads to ensure underwriting operations targets are delivered (financial, quality and productivity).
  • Creating an engaged community that pride themselves on underwriting professionalism and customer focus
  • Guiding and coaching the team to increase technical capability and improve underwriting service and standards.
  • Driving operational improvement and managing change
  • Maintaining an effective and proportionate business control environment in line with internal policy and material external legislative and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Actively engaging in the identification, prioritisation, negotiation and winning of Account relationships in line with agreed business strategies and delegated authorities.
  • Managing complaints within own licence level in an appropriate fashion to maintain quality and continuity of relationships.
  • Contributing to the wider development of effective business strategies, priorities, and market propositions, drawing on own knowledge, understanding and interpretation of local markets, competitors and Accounts.
  • Designing and monitoring SLA performance within specific lines of business
  • Supporting the on-boarding of underwriters and creating development plans/supports
  • Identifying operational issues and suggesting possible improvements
  • Monitoring and evaluating underwriter performance, providing learning or coaching opportunities, and taking corrective action, if necessary
  • Preparing reports and analysing data to assist management as they determine goals
  • Contributing to technical audits and peer review processes as required to support and enable the maintenance of an effective control environment.
  • Providing expert advice, guidance and coaching to less qualified and/or experienced colleagues to address technical referrals and raise standards and expertise across the technical community.
  • Develop and maintain good internal relationships to support the end-to-end delivery of the customer proposition. Managing customer expectations and delivering the relevant Brand Promise
  • Working with the Dublin Trading Team Manager and other Senior Underwriters to build an outperformance culture in the Commercial underwriting community.
Requirements

  • Technical underwriting ability: 5+ years commercial underwriting experience. Exposure to developing niche products or growing program business an asset.

  • Comfortable with change: Building a leading SME portfolio will require pivoting on strategies and initiatives. You are okay with priority shifts as we grow together.
  • Complete the appropriate annual CPD requirements as defined by the Financial Regulator and/or the Professional Body to which you are affiliated (e.g. III, CII, CIPD, ACCA)
  • Proficiency required in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and processing applications.

Regulatory Requirements

If this role is defined as a "controlled function" by the Central Bank Reform Act 2010 Regulations 2011. Any appointment will be conditional on the company being satisfied that you meet the requirements as set out in the Fitness & Probity standards issued in this Act.

This role falls within scope of the Minimum Competency Code (MCC) and requires the jobholder to have attained or be working towards the status of 'Qualified Person' in the relevant function(s) e.g. personal lines, commercial lines and claims, or have attained a Statement of Grandfathered Status in the relevant function(s). A New Entrant working towards the status of 'Qualified Person' must be supervised by a Qualified Person or a Grandfathered Person.

The status of 'Qualified Person' can be achieved through attaining the qualification of Certified Insurance Practitioner (CIP), Accredited Product Advisor (APA), or Associate or Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII or FCII). The jobholder must also comply with all CPD requirements as outlined in the MCC.
