Job Description
Commercial Manager / Commercial Director Overview

We are seeking an experienced and commercially astute Commercial Manager / Commercial Director to lead the delivery of commercial management services across key business units, including Energy, Water, and Special Projects.

This is a senior leadership role with responsibility for driving commercial strategy, managing risk, maximising financial performance, and developing high performing teams within a dynamic construction environment. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping business outcomes and supporting continued growth.

Key Responsibilities Commercial Leadership & Strategy
  • Lead all commercial activities across the Business Unit, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives and governance frameworks
  • Develop and implement commercial strategies, including tendering, margin enhancement, and cash flow optimisation
  • Oversee contract negotiation, risk management, and compliance with legal and corporate standards
  • Provide assurance across contract administration, change control, and project payment mechanisms
Work Winning & Project Oversight
  • Support and contribute to bid and pre construction activities
  • Ensure strong commercial input into tenders, including pricing strategy and risk evaluation
  • Monitor project performance through structured reviews, ensuring KPIs and financial targets are achieved
Financial & Risk Management
  • Maximise cash performance through effective WIP control and cash flow management
  • Identify, assess, and manage commercial risks and opportunities across the portfolio
  • Support dispute resolution and ensure appropriate recovery via contractual and insurance mechanisms
Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead and develop a high performing commercial team across all levels
  • Set clear objectives, manage performance, and support career progression, including professional accreditation
  • Foster a culture of strong commercial awareness and accountability
Stakeholder & Business Unit Management
  • Partner with senior leadership, including Operations Directors and Executive teams, to drive performance
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and represent the business at industry level
  • Ensure alignment with group strategy, processes, and a collaborative "one business" approach
Corporate & Continuous Improvement
  • Contribute to business improvement initiatives and commercial best practice development
  • Participate in audits, governance reviews, and implementation of group procedures
Candidate Profile Qualifications
  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
  • Chartered status (MRICS or equivalent) preferred
  • Strong knowledge of construction contracts and commercial frameworks
Experience & Skills
  • Extensive experience in a senior commercial role within the construction sector
  • Proven track record in leading and developing multi level teams
  • Strong commercial acumen with expertise in contract management, cost control, and risk mitigation
  • Solid understanding of project controls and programming
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office
