Job Title: Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist MSK OPD Triage

Department: Allied Therapy

Reports to: Allied Therapy Manager/ Head of Orthopaedics and Spine Services

Key Responsibilities

1. PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.1. Co-ordinate and deliver an effective and efficient Out Patient Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy service. This will include:

• 1.1.1. Annual plan for MSK Physiotherapy service.
• 1.1.2. Resource planning and management to support service development.
• 1.1.3. Lead MSK physiotherapy marketing and promotional activities.
• 1.1.4. Participate in MSK physiotherapy business development opportunities - this includes relationship development with stakeholders including Consultants and General Practitioners.
• 1.1.5. Participate in research and development.
• 1.1.6. Develop and administer the highest quality of service by identifying and implementing operational procedures in line with best practice standards.
• 1.1.7. Continue to develop relationships with wider hospital teams including Orthopaedics, Pain Medicine, Rheumatology, General outpatients etc.
• 1.1.8. To lead one or more specific aspects of the service (e.g. Spinal Triage, ED Physio, Vestibular OPD, Lymphoedema care etc.).

1.2. To provide an enhanced triage and physiotherapy service as part of the Orthopaedic and Spine services pathways.

• 1.2.1. To ensure patients are seen by the right person, at the appropriate time and in the right setting.
• 1.2.2. To assist in optimising waiting times for patients to be seen within the Orthopaedic and Spine service.
• 1.2.3. To liaise with Orthopaedic consultants undertaking triage of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal referrals to improve the pathway of care and facilitate efficient access to Orthopaedics, Spine and Physiotherapy or other services as required.

2. MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:

• 2.1.1. To participate in the management of the Physiotherapy Service as a member of the Senior Physiotherapy Management team in co-operation with the Allied Therapy Manager.
• 2.1.2. To create and promote good working relationships through open communication.
• 2.1.3. To coordinate in the staff induction, staff appraisal and in-service training programme in Outpatient physiotherapy specialities.
• 2.1.4. To provide direct supervision to a Senior OPD staff member, including clinical supervision, service development supervision and performance management.
• 2.1.5. To actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
• 2.1.6. To maintain appropriate records and statistics sufficient for organisational and legal purposes to include work related injuries/incidents.
• 2.1.7. To regularly review and update relevant Physiotherapy Policies and Standard Operating Procedure documents.
• 2.1.8. To assist the Allied Therapy Manager in achieving Quality and Accreditation requirements for Physiotherapy.
• 2.1.9. To provide in inter disciplinary education to promote physiotherapy service in Beacon Hospital.
• 2.1.10. Enhance his/her skills in order to initiate and respond to changes in the work environment as additional roles may be demanded e.g. data analysis, clinical audit, continued professional development and research.
• 2.1.11. To provide flexible assistance to the Allied Therapy Manager in delivering clinical care and in operational roles such as Btime administration, Policy and Procedure Document updates, Beacon Hospital committee participation.

3. STAFF MANAGEMENT

• 3.1.1. To lead by example a professional, dedicated and punctual team.
• 3.1.2. To encourage professional development of team members through promotion of self learning, formal courses and in service training.

NOTE 1. This is a full time post with hours of work are at the discretion of the Allied Therapy Manager and in line with service needs based on contracted hours. Evening and weekend work will be required to support marketing and service development opportunities intermittently.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Candidates must hold a degree in Physiotherapy, be registered with CORU and membership of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists is desirable.

Experience

(Amount and Type)

• Candidates must hold at least 8 years post graduate experience with at least 6 of those in the area of Musculo skeletal Physiotherapy.
• MSc in Advanced Physiotherapy, Sports Medicine, Sports Physiotherapy, Manual Therapy or equivalent is desirable.

• Applies evidence based outcome measures to evaluate efficacy of treatment and Quality of care.
• Delegates a clinical caseload and other tasks to team members.
• Balances clinical demands with other responsibilities.
• Demonstrates an educational role for example as a 'mentor' to staff, students and members of other disciplines.
• Participates in research.
• Generates new knowledge and skills in the specified area of Physiotherapy.
• Disseminates advanced ethical awareness and responsibilities in specific areas.
• Demonstrates leadership and an understanding of service planning.
• Demonstrates a critical understanding of the context in which practice occurs for example social, political and interprofessional collaboration.
• Strong evidence of Continuing Professional Development - Advanced Neuromusculoskeletal Physiotherapy modules, Musculoskeletal Image recognition modules, Strength and Conditioning, Pilates, Biomechanics desirable.

All posts in Beacon Hospital require a high level of flexibility to ensure the delivery of an effective and efficient service. Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager of hospital management.
