The Early Intervention in Psychosis service (EIS) is a community-based, multidisciplinary service for people experiencing a first episode of psychosis. This post will support embedding research into EIS in SLaM, enriching and improving the clinical care provided. The post will support a new cohort study, the Early Intervention Mission, funded by the Mental Health Mission, focusing on streamlining routine outcome data collection, pioneering mobile app use for patient-reported symptoms, and aligning with blood sample collection for future genomic analysis and personalised medicine. The role will work with Dr Katherine Beck, Prof James MacCabe, and the Early Intervention Mission leadership team to connect the Psychosis Department (King's College London) with the clinical team to fulfil study objectives.

This role offers the development of research and clinical skills and is suited to those with an interest in a clinical-academic career.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage own research and administrative activities with support from senior colleagues.
• Contribute to wider project planning.
• Contribute to the design of research materials and arrange data gathering.
• Support study delivery by undertaking research activities outlined in approved study documents; facilitate the informed consent process as per legislation and the Mental Capacity Act; develop and maintain skills in research processes.
• Provide staff and participants with information about the purpose of studies, the resources required and act as a point of contact for staff involved.
• Collect and maintain data and study documentation in compliance with relevant regulations.
• Adhere to Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP), Research Governance Framework, and national and local practices and policies.
• Provide written or verbal progress reports.

Providing medical input to patients attending EI services

• Comprehensive clinical assessment including structured interviews, standardised scales, cognitive assessments, physical examinations, and assessment of adherence.
• Production of clinical reports and maintenance of clinical databases.
• Explain treatment options to patients and carers.
• Communicate with GPs, CMHTs, and secondary physical health services.

Autonomous Working

• Prioritise work effectively and work independently, seeking advice where appropriate.

Job responsibilities

Key Responsibilities (and as above):

1. Manage own research and administrative activities within guidelines provided by senior colleagues; contribute to project planning and data gathering.
2. Gather, analyse, and present qualitative and/or quantitative data from various sources; run day-to-day administration of the research project.
3. Represent the research group at external meetings/seminars; support study delivery and ensure compliant data collection and handling; provide progress reports to the research team.

Person Specification

• Qualified medical practitioner
• Full GMC registration
• At least 1 year of NHS doctor experience
• Experience working with individuals with psychotic disorders is desirable
• Intercalated BSc and/or Master's/PhD
• Evidence of participation in or enthusiasm for research (e.g., publications)
• Participation in quality improvement projects or audits
• Experience of recruiting to research studies including clinical trials
• Experience of psychiatry rotation in Foundation Years and/or Core Training and/or prior clinical psychiatric research
• Ability to work in a team
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organisational skills for accurate record keeping and reporting
• Awareness of confidentiality and data protection
