Objective

The principal objective of the post is to participate in the development, direction, teaching, facilitation, and examinations of the undergraduate teaching programme.

• Participate in clinical courses such as ACLS, IBU and PALS and be refunded up to €450 on successful completion; (Full list of approved courses available from HR)
• Refunds available up to €450 on passing approved examinations;
• Benefit from up to 14 days Educational Leave to support participation on approved courses, exams or professional development activities
• Clinical Lecturers and Tutors can avail of reduced fees for the completion of higher degrees within RCSI e.g. MD / PhD / MCh / MSc. (subject to some terms and conditions further information available from HR)

Contract

This appointment is available for a period of one year initially, with scope for renewal subject to performance or pursuance of a higher degree with RCSI while in the post.

Salary: Level of appointment will depend on the successful candidates' previous experience.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

• Delivery, assessment and ongoing improvement of small group simulation teaching in clinical microbiology
• Delivery and assessment of clinical microbiology teaching in the School of Medicine, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy.
• Participation in curriculum development including teaching innovation, case development and spiraling of clinical microbiology materials throughout the undergraduate medicine programme in the School of Medicine.
• Providing resources and communication with student groups via the RCSI virtual learning environment
• Ensuring that all Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland policies and procedures are adhered to.
• Complying with statutory legislation and other guidelines for the candidate's own and general staff welfare and safety.
• Undergoing programmes of training and development as may be required and as agreed.
• Representing the best interests of the RCSI at all times.

Other responsibilities include

• Conducting research aligned with the activities of the Clinical Microbiology Department; Areas and outputs to be defined by Head of Department or nominee
• Performing clinical work onsite in RCSI Teaching Hospitals; Detail and commitment to be defined with the Head of

Department

• Ensuring that all Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland policies and procedures are adhered to
• Complying with statutory legislation and Department rules and requirements in furtherance of your own and general staff welfare and safety
• Always representing the best interests of the Department/RCSI
• Performing such other duties as may be required from time to time

The successful candidate should

• Possess evidence of registration with the Irish Medical Council
• Possess FRCPath in clinical microbiology
• Possess MRCPI or equivalent
• Possess a keen interest in lecturing and interacting with undergraduate students
• Possess excellent communication skills

It would be advantageous if the successful candidate had

• Previous experience in clinical microbiology
• Previous experience of teaching and assessing students in an academic environment
• Previous experience in conducting research leading to outputs

Interview Process

It is proposed that interviews will be held in early October 2026.

Additional Requirements

Please note that successful candidates will be required to complete:

• Occupational Health Clearance
• Garda Vetting
• Police Clearance (if in residence outside of Ireland for periods of 6 months or more at any stage)

Garda Vetting and Occupational Health checks will be conducted by RCSI and partners but Police Clearance certification from countries outside of Ireland will be the responsibility of the successful candidate.
