Job overview

Fulfil the day to day activities of a gastroenterology registrar including clinic, ward rounds, training endoscopy lists and general medical on calls. Working under supervision of the Gastroenterology consultants. There are ample opportunities to see in-patient Gastroenterology referrals. The post is Fixed term for 6 months with a view to further 6 months extension. The post would be excellent preparation for a candidate applying for a specialist training post.

Full time position with flexible contribution to out of hours GIM on call on discussion with successful appointee.

Full registration and a licence to practice with the GMC at point of application is required

Main duties of the job

University Hospitals Sussex Foundation Trust is the regional teaching hospital, providing general acute services to Brighton and Hove and Mid Sussex and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the south east of England. It forms the east part of the newly formed University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust.

The Gastroenterology Department is a medical department which sits within theGastroenterology and Screening directorate. The physician team currently comprises 9 full time consultant gastroenterologists and a professor of Hepatology. They provide cover for gastroenterology patients and emergency endoscopy 7 days a week.

Specialist interests in the department include advanced therapeutic endoscopy including EMR, ESD, ERCP and EUS with teaching and training both in endoscopic skills and directly within the medical school. The department also provides services including video capsule endoscopy, an IBD super/MDT clinic with a nationally recognised psychology service. There is also access to trans nasal endoscopy, oesophageal Manometry physiology and nutrition service. The Hepatology service (including the regional hepatitis service) is active in research. There is a monthly joint clinic with the transplant hepatologists from Kings College Hospital. The department is a JAG accredited endoscopy training unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be expected to backfill the duties of one of the current deanery SpRs daytime clinical activity to allow immersive endoscopy exposure. There are currently 5 deanery trainees. The duties are expected to include (on average):

  • 2 outpatient clinics per week
  • a minimum of 2 training endoscopy lists per week
  • acute unselected medical take (out of hours component negotiable with successful candidate)
  • ward duties (daily consultant led ward rounds in place)

There are additional opportunities to attend both cancer and benign GI MDT meetings. We are keen that candidates are afforded the educational opportunities of specialist trainees in each of the posts. All successful applicants will be allocated an educational supervisor. Post-holders will be encouraged to attend appropriate local speciality training sessions and complete formal assessments in line with what is expected of speciality trainees. At the end of the post successful applicants will therefore be able to demonstrate evidence of learning and the acquisition of skills and competences that will strengthen their applications for speciality training posts.

Person specification Experience/Qualifications
  • Basic Medical Degree
  • Full GMC Registration with a license to practice
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
  • Higher Degree
  • MRCP or equivalent
Clinical Skills & Experience
  • At least 4 years working in hospital medicine following qualification
  • At least 2 years working in GIM or medical speciality
  • Completion of Core medical training or equivalent
  • Experience in Gastroenterology
Knowledge
  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
Organisation & Planning
  • Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
  • Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended
