Clinical Fellow in Gastroenterology ST1

Applications are invited for a clinical fellow level doctor in Gastroenterology at Musgrove Park Hospital starting in August 2026. This post offers an exciting opportunity to work on the gastroenterology inpatient ward for trainees interested in pursuing a career in gastroenterology or other related specialty.
The post is for 12 months, August 2026 to August 2027 and there will be no commitment to the general medical rota.
The department has a strong reputation for excellent clinical care and a growing research portfolio. We are looking for dynamic individuals who are keen to work in a ward-based environment but also take an active part in quality improvement projects.
The successful applicants will work closely with the existing specialist nurses, postgraduate doctors in training, registrars and consultants to deliver inpatient care.
This post is suitable for people interested in a future career in gastroenterology or related speciality. Applicants should have completed Foundation Training and have some experience at SHO level beyond this and have minimum 2 years' experience of working in the NHS.
Main duties of the jobThere will be an expectation to attend the F2 teaching program and the gastroenterology teaching programme during the placement.
This post is mainly to support the inpatient service. This is supervised by the consultant gastroenterologist of the week (GoW). Currently, 6 consultants provide ward cover on a rolling rota. The ward consultant provides at least 4 formal ward rounds per week along with daily reviews of any new patients or sick patients who require review.
Outpatient work may comprise a mixture of telephone and face to face clinics at Musgrove Park Hospital, Bridgwater Hospital or Wellington Community Hospital. These clinics will comprise a mixture of new and follow up patients. There is direct consultant supervision either at the time (face to face clinics) or at a weekly consultant led supervision session (telephone clinics). In addition there is a weekly cancer clinic which is directly supervised by a consultant.
The successful applicant will work as part of the ward team on the 21 bed gastroenterology ward with the team of F1, F2 and IMT trainees as well as the specialist registrars (3 Severn Deanery Trainees and 1 or 2 Trust Registrars). Qualifications- MBBS or equivalent
- Full registration and licence to practice with GMC
- ALS
- GCP
- Completion of foundation training or equivalent
- Able to carry out the duties described in the job description
- Experience of working in the NHS for minimum 2 years
- Teaching of junior medical staff, nursing staff
- Demonstrate a commitment to gastroenterology
- Evidence of participation in audit / quality improvement locally and understanding of the principles
