Job Description
CESR Clinical Fellow in Emergency Medicine

This exciting post is aimed at providing clinicians with the support and training required to successfully achieve a CESR in Emergency Medicine. This 12 month post (in the first instance) is a structured training programme in a Major Trauma Centre, offering 3 month secondments in ICU, anaesthetics, acute medicine and in our dedicated Paediatric Emergency Department, with the option for extensions which will be mutually agreed.

You will be working at a junior registrar level in our Emergency Department, gaining experience with our enthusiastic and experienced consultant group. Following successful completion of this year and evidence of progression towards exams the candidate will move onto completing secondments in ICU and anaesthetics while continuing to gain EM experience. The final 2 years will involve the trainee working at a senior registrar level while completing secondments in the Paediatric Emergency Department and Acute Medicine.

The contract will be reviewed annually and may be extended on a mutually agreed basis, based on successful completion of required competencies at annual review.

During this training programme there will be opportunities to engage in QIP and management projects and we have fortnightly teaching. Our consultant body has FRCEM examiners, ALS, APLS and ETC instructors and consultants with an extensive interest in US. We also have a consultant and 2 locums who have successfully completed the CESR programme.

Main duties of the job

Opportunities to engage in QIP and management projects, fortnightly teaching, exposure to a team of FRCEM examiners, ALS, APLS, ETC instructors and consultants experienced with US. The trainee may work with the Cardiff Physician Response Unit and with Cardiff University for academic projects, and can develop interests in medical education, CEM and US.

Person Specification
  • Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent medical qualification; Life Support provider status on ALS with RCUK, ERC or ARC; Full GMC registration with a licence to practise; ATLS, APLS, MRCEM; Intercalated Degree; MSc or PhD.
  • Experience: Previous management of adult and paediatric emergencies; at least 4 years full time postgraduate training; at least 12 months in a consultant led NHS Emergency Department; evidence of participation in Research and Clinical Governance; interests in specialties related to Emergency Medicine; previous NHS experience.
  • Abilities: Commitment to a team approach and multi disciplinary working; attitudes to emergency medicine compatible with the board's aims; counselling and communication skills.
  • Audit: Participation in clinical audit; understanding of clinical risk management and governance; engagement with revalidation.
  • Research: Ability to appraise research critically; initiation, progression and conclusion of research projects with publication.
  • Management: Whole systems approach to ED working; experience in change management; evidence of management training.
