CAT-B Nuclear Watchkeeper - Nuclear Submarine Engineering Consultant
£55,000-£85,000 + benefits | Hybrid | SC-eligible (UK National)
We're supporting a specialist engineering consultancy working across maritime, defence, nuclear and other high-hazard sectors.
They're looking for a former or transitioning Royal Navy submariner with Category B Nuclear Watchkeeper qualification to bring operational judgement, nuclear professionalism, and submarine-domain credibility into consultancy delivery.
The role
You'll apply your submarine propulsion/marine engineering experience to client-facing technical work, supporting safe and evidence-based decision-making across complex, regulated programmes. The level of responsibility (delivery vs. work-package leadership/mentoring/supporting proposals) will reflect your experience.
What you'll be doing:
- Providing operationally informed technical advice to defence/maritime/nuclear clients
- Reviewing and assuring technical documentation (procedures, instructions, evidence packs, submissions)
- Supporting activities across design, maintenance, commissioning, trials, training, supportability, and through-life support
- Identifying and communicating risk, assumptions, dependencies, and practical implications in technical outputs
- Contributing to nuclear safety/assurance/hazard and risk work (within competence and authority)
- Participating in client meetings, workshops, technical reviews and presentations
- Managing defined work packages with a focus on quality, schedule, cost and client outcomes
Essential experience
- Royal Navy Submarine Service background in a nuclear propulsion/marine engineering environment
- Qualified Category B Nuclear Watchkeeper, with practical watchkeeping experience on a nuclear submarine
- Strong understanding of nuclear professionalism, procedural compliance, conservative decision-making and safety culture
- Ability to translate operational experience into clear, defensible technical advice
- Confident communicator (written and verbal) with multi-disciplinary teams and senior stakeholders
- UK National and able to meet Security Check (SC) clearance requirements
- Clear understanding of ongoing obligations around classified/sensitive information
Package
- £55,000-£85,000 (DOE)
- 25 days annual leave, rising to 30 with service
- Pension matched up to 10%
- Private healthcare
- Professional development support + Pathway to civilian accreditation/registration
- Performance-related bonus
- Hybrid working (project/security/client dependent)
Send your CV with a short note outlining your RN submarine engineering background, Category B qualification, and the type of consultancy work you want to develop into. Please don't include any classified or operationally sensitive information.
