Circa: Salary - Salary Plan, 24,071.00 GBP Annual. The Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) is recruiting three interns to join the Broadening Horizons programme for 10 weeks. This paid internship supports chemistry students and graduates from Black and minority ethnic backgrounds across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. The programme aims to foster an inclusive and diverse chemical sciences workforce. Interns receive a salary of £24,071 per annum (pro rata) and are employed through Workday with the following application requirements.
Role and responsibilitiesThe role is based within the core materials portfolio, working across five materials science journals including Materials Horizons. Responsibilities include:
- Provide hands-on experience in developing and curating journal content.
- Science writing experience in journal blog writing and creating social media posts.
- Collaborate with researchers external to the RSC to organise subject-based article collections.
- Work as part of an experienced editorial team covering the full editorial process from commissioning through to final publication.
- Support future careers in science publishing, science communication, or academic research through this placement.
Open to hybrid working. The role is contractually based at the Cambridge or London office, with the option to work from home within the UK. Attendance at the office is expected as needed for the role.

- Essential: Strong science background and qualifications
- Enthusiasm and passion for science communication
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
- Desirable: Undergraduate degree in chemistry or other physical science subject
- Previous experience of interacting with researchers in industry or academia
- Confident use of Twitter/other social media platforms
