Job Description

Basic Grade Pharmacist (0.6 WTE, Part time, Minimum 6 months Specified Purpose Contract)

St Patrick's Mental Health Services (SPMHS) is seeking a Basic Grade Pharmacist to join the pharmacy team. The role involves working 21 hours per week (Wednesday-Friday 9am 5pm) within the hospital pharmacy, primarily in a dispensary setting.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise pharmacy technician staff and ensure compliance with legislation when dispensing medicines.
  • Provide guidance and advice on medicine procurement.
  • Advise medical and nursing staff on safe, effective, and economical medication use, promoting generic dispensing where appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality of service users and staff members.
  • Deliver education to service users and staff regarding medicines.
  • Maintain approved quality standards at pharmacy and ward level.
  • Comply with legal, transit, and security requirements, and ensure proper storage, supply, and disposal of medicines.
  • Maintain accurate records for purchasing, quality control, compounding, and dispensing in a secure environment.
  • Foster communication within the department and with other hospital departments.
  • Engage in continuous education to stay current with developments in the medical field.
Person Specification Qualifications and Experience
  • Degree in Pharmacy.
  • Registered or eligible for registration with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland.
  • Post registration hospital pharmacist experience (desirable).
  • Experience in psychiatry (desirable).

  • Proof of clinical knowledge in pharmacy, with willingness to develop further expertise.

Terms and Conditions
  • Part time 0.6 WTE; Specified Purpose contract.
  • Working week: 21 hours per week, Wednesday-Friday 9am 5pm.
  • Salary: €49,913 - €79,961 pro rata, based on SPMHS Pharmacist 2026 pay scale.
  • Annual leave: 27 days per annum pro rata.
  • Pension: Defined contribution scheme with a 4% deduction; members after probation.
  • Probation: Six month probationary period with ongoing review.
  • Health: Must be fully competent and capable of performing duties, with reasonable prospects of efficient service.
  • Character: Good character required.
  • Retirement age: 66 years.
